Wind noise! Weather strip issue

While getting the recall done for the wires on the power seats, i had them check out the wind noise on the drivers side door (for the 2nd time) and of course "sorry, we don't hear anything", but they "adjusted" the door the first time.

As i explained to them, it's there more with a strong cross wind. The tech's eye's light up "OHHHHH.... weeeeellll..... Nissan only designed the car with respect to wind noise and whatnot from the front"...

WTF!!!!!! From the front?!!!! I had to laugh while i drove home thinking about that one.

So, if i'm driving forward (as the car's only designed to go forward and reverse, no turning because then i'd be going a different direction of course), and it's raining across the car, i should turn into it because it's not designed for anything coming from an angle to stop the rain or wind!

So, i'm taking it to a different dealer. Just had to share this, i found it somewhat humorous (the answer atleast)!

Take it back till they fix it or you hit 36k. You should also have them do the TSB for the "shimmy" that can happen with the front end. Keep after them till they either replace the tires and adjust the rack assemble correctly.

One problem fixed (I HOPE) and another still there.. need some input.

The dealer replaced my steering rack to fix the shimmy issue and replaced the weather strip around the driver side door to fix the wind noise, but the wind noise is STILL there!

After driving it while it was calm, and not windy outside, i realized cross-wind had NOTHING to do with it, just made it worse and more noticeable. With the driver side window all the way up and radio off you can definitely hear the wind, similar to the wind noise you'd hear if you had the sunroof open a slight bit, so it's not like a howling/whistling sound, if ya know what i mean

Any ideas what else to look at? The door shuts solid, weather stripping is new, and the window slides into the seal on the inside door frame edge just fine.

I'm sure i'm on some Nissan 'Hit List' since i keep bringing her back so much!

Check where the side view mirror mounts to the door, it could be leaking there.

Have a friend in the passenger seat control the steering and speed (cruise control) while you probe around the door and window with a s***hoscope.

Great, this useless place doesn't like s-t-e-t-h-o-scope

You've never heard of the s***-hoe-scope? Its a scope that helps you pimp hoes with, that's why the word is banned on this site. Your emphasis is on the wrong sylable. Wait, I must have it wrong, it must be the "s t e t" word that is the banned word.

Cool! thanks for info, i'll check that out. I'm sure there's a 'sticky' on the org, but is the door cover a b|tch to get off?

The wind noise sounds like it's coming from the upper corner of the door, BUT not to say I'm wrong and it may be the mirror or perhaps the tweeter. As i have an appointment tomorrow, I'll have em check both of these out.

I got back from dealer and the tech who replaced the weather strip said he couldn't hear anything after he first did it. I had another service tech drive the car with me in it and he heard it now.

We get back to the dealer and the Service Advisor explains to me they're gonna have to start charging me for these adjustments because I'm only allowed free adjustments up to 12,000 miles.

Well, the tech decided to adjust the door so it closes a little more solid, hoping the new weather strip would make a more solid seal to the door frame, which he felt pretty confident it would fix the problem. I wasn't charged this time because i guess by dorr apparently didn't close the same as the other, odd as that sounds.

Going home i heard the noise again, same spot, right above my left ear near the corner of the door, closest to the pillar.

I did my own investigation by putting, crazy as it sounds, electrical tape on the outside of the drivers side door on the glass and the door frame, where the glass slides in. I went from the corner of the door outwards, then from the corner down parallel to the pillar. The wind noise was now DRAMATICALLY reduced, MUCH better, especially after taking the tape off and comparing the difference. I also ran the tape along the seal/weather strip on the frame of the car itself, which didn't help.

Sooo... if it's much more quiet with the tape on the outside, it is the way this car is designed, or possibly with the seal that the window rolls into?

Sorry to bump a old thread but this is driving me crazy. It will do it at low speeds some times and most prominent at 60-75 with no one in front of me and goes away if I am behind a car. Just had my timing chain tensioners changed a couple thousand miles ago. Could this be caused by my billet grille? I am going to take it off and drive it and see. Any insight would be appreciated.

Let the drivers side window down just a fraction of a fraction. See if that helps.

I am trying to determine if it is because of the billet grille. Anyone else had similar issues?

If your issue is anything like the original poster, sounds like the door is bent around the window pillars. Would probably take a body shop to make the right "adjustments" to bend things back...

I really don't think it is that. It sounds like it is coming from the front of the car. I am going to take off the billet grille to see if that solves the problem.

If it ends up being the grille will have to find a C Mod Grille. Which is what I should have done in the first place.

So it did end up being the billet grille making the whistling noise. Time to move on to a different grille.
