Insulating intake

I got this Idea from Kam so he gets all the credit. But, I think this is a great idea, so I wanted to share with the rest of the group. Those with aftermarket intakes are using aluminum piping, which absorbs lots of heat. Ask Kam what happens when he touched his intake after driving it. OUCH, it gets really hot.

By insulating the pipe, air temp is reduced which increases horsepower. I got my stuff at Lowes. It has a top layer of aluminum and lower layer of self adhesive insulation. I cut out pieces and fit them to my intake. I only have a Stillen intake which only replaces the front piece. But I insulated all of it. Here are pics:

Kam, please share your pics and info as well!!!

You got it Deus.

http://www.watsonsglen.com/Kam/Maxima/Injen/index.htm

I used this way back in the day on my Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royal Broughm. (Frig say that fast). I had a custome made intake on it with a drilled hole for MAF, and made out of a K&N cone with custom duct work. Well I remember insulating it and totaly forgot about it for the maxi.

Few weeks ago, I went to mosport for Hanson Advanced Track school, anywhoo, when I opened the hood and touched it..... I almost left my palm permanently on the Injen CAI. Never thought it would get that hot.

So I put the insulating foam back on it like back in the day on the Olds. Anywhoo, I get less knocking during hot days and the intake never gets hot (only mildly warm). Not too bad for a $7.99 mod.

If you have a CAI made out of metal, alumi, baryllium..........erghh or anything else metallic, try this out. You wont be disapointed and your Maxis engine will love you.

the insulation is good an all but if it gets wet it will stay wet and if it stays wet and is touching metal it will in time corrode.... I think it is a great idea but I did something a tad bit different..... instead of wrapping the intake and make it look all ufo-ish..... I took the intake out and painted the pieces of metal using high temp heat spray paint with ceramic coating..... ceramic is infamous for how it dissipates heat..... try that you won't be sorry..... practically cool to the touch every time..... looks a hell of alot better also.... the spray paint comes in all different types of colors as well...... MAKE sure if you use this stuff you let it dry...... I used a hairdrier to dry my pieces...... that way I didn't get any fumes or anything else while driving..... ohh and don't spray the inside of the piping...... not a cool idea..... unless you give it a couple days to cure..... I know I wouldn't want any fumes going into my intake.... food for though.... good stuff tho guys....

after checking out intakes on here I decided to do the the custom self install.... the one I had was old and needed a new filter so instead of just buying another filter I just bought another filter and a couple pieces from the custom intake design..... looks much better and sounds better too.... anyways I will post pics in a few minutes..... also tail light pics.....

this intake is made of plastic and doesn't get hot....... I used to have the stillen setup which I sprayed with black engine enamel that had ceramic coating in it.... needed to change filter so I decided to do some other changes and well this looks good and sounds good..... and stays cool..... I like it better than the stillen one I had..... check the tail light thread to see my tail lights.....

While I'm in there I think I'm gonna insulate underneath the intake manifold after the throttle body, because the intake sits right over the rear exhaust manifold and it gets REEEEEEAAAAALLLLLY hot. That does nothing but hurt performance. Not sure how Im gonna get in there.

I wouldn't recommend doing it anyway..... if you are worried about heat dissipation than there are many other ways to do so.... upgrade thermostat..... change mixture of coolant...... add Royal purple to coolant.... add an oil cooler.... remove the stock radiator and replace with a more efficient one...... change out the fan and put in a double fan with higher rpm...... get a different hood maybe you could be the first max with a custom hood application..... take it off and to a bodyshop to customize it and put some vents or scoops..... there are so many different possibilities..... wrapping the engine should be the last resort...... they did that back when there were no other options...... also I found that when at the track roll your windows down and blast your heat on high at 90 until you get directed to your lane turn heater off and shut windows...... sit back and enjoy...... also take the front two tires down to 25psi and leave back two at 32psi...... for 5speed tranny guys when at the line shift to manumatic and pwr brake to 1500-2000rpm anything above that is wasted in either a burnout or a bad start...... 3rd yellow let off brake.... once you start to move, I mean as soon as you start moving press gas to floor shifting at 5,700-6,000 rpm in each gear..... myself with about 150 extra lbs ran a 14.725 all stock using this method...... not bad concidering stock is supposed to be 15.4......

That sounds good, like water heater insulation held by tie wraps...

1/2 of the reason for my fujita is how nice it looks.
