Intake vs. MPG

i duno what wrong from what i hear a new intake is suppose to improve your mpg but its the exact opposite for me, i recently installed a fujita intake and my gas mileage seems to be slaughtered, im averaging 16-17 mpg where as before i was averaging 20 ish in the same driving conditions. can anyone suggest something ? could the intake be installed wrong ?

Well, after just finishing installing my new Fujita Intake, and test drive it, I can only say, forget about MPG, that sounds is just crazy.

I also thought on that, getting better MPG, but after I heard my car now, I doubt that I will accomplish it.

Well, where I live I'm getting 16-17 since I have the car, so for me it hasn't been that bad, let me see now what happens with the intake before I can judge it.

Remember that to install the Intake you should have reset your ECu by removing the battery cables, once you do that, the ECU will re-learn the way you drive, so, I'm assuming that maybe before your Intake was there your car learned that your driving was getting you around 20 MPG, maybe, and I say Maybe, after you reset the ECU now your Car learned your more aggresive style and it's showing it.

Maybe you will need to reset the ECU again, and take it easy for a while to see if that gets you back to your 20 MPG.

I would double check the MAF installation or look for an air leak. Pictures?

Remember, that ECU's got a memory like your wife/girlfriend. Ruff up that pedal too much and it becomes more responsive. Could be CAI novelty making you spend more time at WOT.

a lead foot doesn't help with milage at all. i suppose after getting an intake, most of us are eager to hear that growl...so we give it a little more gas than usual. (i know i would, just ordered the berk. )

If the intake helps deliver more air, in turn the ECU will deliver more fuel. That, along with your right foot's ability to make more noise/power you're bound to use more gas.

buh i achually thought the ECU compensated for the extra air...hense y u need to flash the ecu in order to make it work properly with any aftermarket upgrades...?

am i wrong to be under that assumption?

yeah, the ECU compensates for the extra air. With the stock ECU, our cars aren't very bolt-on friendly.

So if the ECU compensates for the A/F mix, then intakes are pretty much just for looks then ?

True, over time the ECU will adjusts some variables to compensate for normal wear. Adding certain aftermarket parts may have a similar effect, resulting in less HP than anticipated. Only a run on the dyno will show how much more power you got out of your CAI. Mine added about 12WHP. Read the posts on what Technosquare can do with your ECU. If you add headers, CAI, and other such goodies, a flash is worth it. Tek-Niq picked up another 17 WHP after the flash.

Well, to be dead honest, I don't really care if the intake free up any HP. I'm getting merely for the looks and sound.

I installed my FUJITA on Friday afternoon, after testing it hard on Friday night, I had 6.8 MPG, after almost normal driving on Saturday, my MPG was 13.0, today after my first normal daily driving when I checked my MPG went up to almost normal 16.5 MPG.

So, in a summary, before my intake my MPG was 16.7-17.2 MPG, and today is 16.5, so for me it's clear, it all depends on how you wants to drive.

93 Octane all the time.

Where I live that's the most I can get in a normal driving, around 17 MPG. Highways can get me 22-25 MPG depending on the trip.

IMO 1 mile increase is negligible. tire pressure, driving habits, etc can have an effect on milage.

I thought it was implied but that was a 1 mile per gallon increase without touching tire pressure (air was never added to the tires - which would hurt mileage, though outside temps have gone up a few degrees to help offset that), driving habits, which for me is close to constant - I've had the same driving routine for the past 10 years and I drive like I'm runnin' from da cops , and using the same fuel (same octane, same gas station). It's also wise to do the math yourself instead of relying on the car's computer. My mileage only varies by a couple tenth's from week to week (that, to me is negligible), so a full mile per gallon step was noticeable on paper. As for the 1 MPG difference, hell, at $3.50/gal, I'll take whatever I can get!

I think Chern has the first gen. Injen. The second gen. (with "MR") has a beefy bracket welded to the intake. It also has a mount for the MAF sensor to plug into. I don't know if there's a performance difference between the two, but the newer one looks real sweet. I get alot of "wow!"'s from mechanics that walk by my car when the hood's popped. I've gotta get some pics posted soon.
Oh yah, I'm running the full CAI; it's tougher to install, inspect, and clean but it is what I paid for and if I was gonna go with a short ram, I probably would have gone with a cheaper intake.
