KYB GR-2 review

I had the now famous clunking sound coming from the front end and with about 45K on her I decided to go with the GR2s all around.

I you have the SL and like the ride you will NOT like these. My car now ride harder then my friends SE. On rippled roads you get little, short up/down, up down motion. You feel like you are being shaken. The car now rides like my 300ZX twin turbo with the suspension set to sport mode. I do not recommend these if you live in the NY/NJ/Long Island area or have "wonderfully" smooth roads like we do...NOT. I was on the Cross Bronx and hit one of the many bumps and the rear felt like it had been launched. These are about 30% stiffer then stock not the 10-15% that KYB indicated. I should have asked 10% stiffer then what. As KYB used the same part for the Maxima SL, SE and the Altima S, SL, SE. Nissan had 5 different struts. If they are all really the same why wouldn't Nissan make one sturt and save themselves a ton of money.

On the plus side I very much liked these when I had my 95. I had the car lowered with ST Springs (very stiff spring) and the GR-2 and the car road as expected, hard on the bumps but over all a good ride. Thinking about it my 04 now rides very much like my lowerd 95 did.

Is the handling better?
One thing I can't stand about the OEM struts is the rebounding.
I am use to driving with Tokicos on NYC roads so I am
looking forward to upgrading to the GR2.

Also depends on the temperature outside. I see a big difference in ride at 25F vs 75F on my GR2's.

I had them in-front. The 1st time riding my 04SE, I could immediately tell it's tighter than stock struts. I wasnot sure if I would like it. Two weeks later, I couldnot even remember how OEM struts feel like. I can swear I cannot tell the difference anymore. Maybe they loosen up.

Are lifetime warranty available for these GR-2?
Once they are worn out, can you exchange new ones for free?

I call that the "ricer bounce". Not calling your car ricer by any means but I have an SE with Progress springs and a rear sway bar, the rest of the suspension is stock and every once in a while if I hit the right series of bumps it feels like the car is doing the ricer bounce.

I have 17" wheels on for the winter and the ride is pretty good but in the summer with the 18"......thats a little different story. I would NOT want my ride to be any harsher. So are there any options besides the KYB - GR2s?

On the plus side, with the springs and rsb, the handling is perfect.

Don't bet on it. If I remember the fine-print on the box, it said you can RMA it back and they will make the call. And it might take upto a month for the process. Who will disable their car that long to exchange a $60 item. I paid the shop a little more, but they will ask the supplier to exchange right on the spot, no question ask if they ever go wrong.

I have KYB AGX 8-way adjustable shocks on the rear and LOOOOVE them. You can dial in a softer ride for long trips, or, if you want to take that cool curvey canyon road or drive in an autocross, you can stiffen the ride to your heart's desire. I have mine on 3 for regular driving, and I set it to about 5-6 for autocross. Install took about 10 minutes too, woohoo.

New Suspension for $586

I just bought a set of KYB's for $195 at www.innerauto.com. Tip: Look up the part #'s on the KYB site first: http://www.kyb.com/products/ and then search the part #'s on the InnerAuto site (vs. searching on your make/model -this doesn't work for some reason). I also bought a set of Progress springs for $116 at www.cattman.com (call for sale price) Custom suspension for $311 - not too shabby! I'm putting everything on next weekend.

I may go for the Nismo sway bars (front and rear) for $275 (http://www.vadennissanparts.com/) Note: These are actually for the Altima, but have been confirmed on this site they fit our Maximas.

Not including installation that's $586 for a pretty killer suspension. Almost half the price of just a pair of coilovers!

I would advise putting on the Altima SE-R front bar for $92, and then Progress rear bar for (I think) $140.

Deus.. They make AGX 8-way adjustable rear shocks for 04-07 Maximas? I am replacing my front struts with KYB GR2 and Progress springs. I would love to have some rear adjustable shocks.

I will let you know this weekend when I install my KYB GR2 struts and Progress springs. I have an SL with OEM 18" rims and tires, I am only replacing the fronts. If the ride is bouncy in the back I will install the rear springs. I like the rear stance and don't want to go any lower. I will probably purchase the AGX 8-way's for the rears later in the spring.

I am getting my springs/struts installed plus alignment for $330 tomorrow (the best deal I could find in Atlanta, GA) on my '05 SL. I'll post a review after the ride home ;-) FYI - the stock right front strut is out after 23K miles - more of a bedspring sound than a clunk. Just took the opportunity to pick both the Prog springs on sale from Cattman for $116 and the KYB struts/shocks on sale elsewhere for $195. Can't wait - it's like Christmas Eve!!!

Oh, sorry aryathegreat. I guess that's $641 total - ouch! If it makes you feel any better, I do believe that I could have gotten them installed from $80 to $120 less. Fortunately, I'm rich (well, 40 and well off compared to some of you younger Maxima owners who don't own your titles ;-), so I'm biting the bullet and going for convenience over expense.
