They sound like they're turboed! It is actually an awesome whistle. I wouldn't fix a thing.

when i had my titan i installed a throttle body spacer and it whistled called the company and the person suggested i sand down the edges of the opening just to round the edges off that seemed to work dont know if this would have anything to do with the spacers just a thought

I'm assuming it just amplified the intake sound..

someone should try it with the stock intake.. I bet there's little to no whistle...

oh, and Aaron, Mike said his whistles too... I talked to him the other day about it..
Thanks for the update Kevin. It does sound like these spacers may have increased the intake noise. Most things you do to the intake will increase the noise. If you do any port work, that definitely increases noise. I know the rougher the airflow, the more noise the walls absorb, resulting in a quieter sounding intake. We did eliminate the oversized gaskets, which were not matched to the intake ports. This made a dip or valley in the airflow, which will make things quieter.

When you install these spacers, you completely get rid of that dip in the airflow, resulting in a much smoother transistion from manifold to manifold.

That's my theory. It makes sense what maximamaximus said. But then rounding the corners will cause those dips in the airflow again, which would defeat the purpose of installing these spacers.

Also, when testing Mike's car, there was no whistle that day b/c we were so busy going WOT. I talked to Mike today and he said there was an intake whistle before we installed the spacers as there are with most intakes. Afterwards, that same whistle was there. He couldn't comment on if it got louder or not. It might have. He just didn't notice it.

It still seems to boil down to what intake setup you have and how much this whistling may bother you.

Does anybody have a loud whistle while still using the stock midpipe? Please feel free to comment. My guess is that the people with the stock resonators don't notice the whistling. Once you get rid of the resonator, everything should get louder and more noticable. Mike had his resonator during our testing, which leads me to believe it muffled the whistling noise enough where we didn't notice it.

IMO, I don't mind a light whistle. But if it's really loud, then that's a different story.

IMO the sound doesn't bother me one bit, I'll take performance over a slight whistling sound that actually does sound like a turbo, I don't have a VID (YET!!!) but my friends said the car sounds awesome!!! I agree, however for the sake of Scoobie Doo, I'd like to see this mystery solved...

Please let me know what you find out. Thanks.
Well I took out the TB spacer last night and replaced it with the stock gasket, and I'm sorry to say - no whistle. I didn't have time to mess around with it too much, but tonight i will confirm whether or not there is a fitment issue.

On a side note - am impressed with the increased performance from this mod. It feels like the engine has a much smoother torque curve now, as I have noticed better acceleration off the line, as well as slightly deeper intake tone. I definately recommend this mod to others.

Is it possible you can get a before and after video for me? I would really like to see how loud this whistle is. It may be hard for the camera to pick up this noise though.

Thanks for all your hardwork.

took some video last night... http://www.putfile.com/ritzcracker/media

there's some others you can use for before/after reference... although, I think the fujita video is with the windows closed.. the spacer videos are with the windows open (and some background music)

Thanks for the videos. The intake does sound nice! I can hear a little bit of whistling going on, but it sounds like a normal CAI or WAI setup. It's hard to hear it whistle in the videos though.

But in all the videos, the intake sounds awesome! Much throatier than my small VE. Makes me want a 3.5 even more!

yeah, it's a faint whistle sound.. mostly drowned out by the wind.. it's much more noticeable when you're up next to a wall or something to bounce the sound back towards you.. still, I sorta like it, and it's not all that loud anyway.

Here's a short video in my car, the whistle sound is so faint, again not worth the fix IMO since the performance outweigh's the sound...

These spacers will not cause a rise in idle. Follow the ECU learning procedures in the instructions. If that doesn't fix your high idle, then you definitely have a small intake leak. If the leak is big enough, you'll get a CEL.

So my question is how many people have purchased these spacers?
How big are the performance gains...is it 10HP as advertised?
How does it affect the warranty?

I heard of an throtle intake spacer too. I hear this works well too.......

How many of you had to take the hood off for install? I ordered mine tonight...hoping to get the Kinetix IM and do them together. I have a GB on that if anyone is interested PM me...

I can't comment on whether it effects the warranty. Hopefully, someone else will chime in.

You do not have to remove your hood. There is more than enough room in order to remove the IM. The only hard spot to get to is the support bracket on the backside of the Elbow. You need tiny hands for that on the 6th gen. Other than that, it's a very straight forward and easy install. Let me know if you have any questions.

I would assume it would go the same as most other parts, where if something went wrong, they would have to prove that the particular part caused the problem in order for it to void the warranty. other than potentially messing something up with the installation (ie: dropping stuff in the valves), there should be no problems.

I'm not 100% sure, but it makes sense to me.

and about the "advertised" gains... the "advertised" dyno info/graph is from one of our members... nothing made up or theoretical..

I listened to all the videos and didn't hear any whistle? Maybe I'm deaf.

I know I a little confused about the "sand down the edges of the opening just to round the edges off " part. It sounds like if fixed the whistling but then it could negatively affect the performance of the spacer. Please explain this part again.

Anyway I went ahead and placed an order. I don't have whistling now so hopefully I won't have any that will be amplified. Looking forward to getting this installed. : My friend at the dealership will do it for $125. He'd even do the Kinetix at the same time, no extra charge, if get that as well.

When you sand down the edges of the spacers, that creates a void in the airflow, which causes turbulence, which muffles the sound.

When you have the thick metal UIM gasket installed, since the ports on the gasket are oversized, your runners are not properly matched. There is a void for the air to flow over, which muffles the sound. When you remove this gasket and improve the airflow, there is going to be more noise. Anytime you smooth out the airflow, you will hear more noise.

But I do NOT recommend sanding down the edges. It will hurt the airflow and it defeats the purposes of getting these spacers.

If you still have the stock intake resonator, you probably won't notice any change in intake tone. But those that already have a full intake system with cone filter and removed resonator, they may experience a change in intake tone.

Also, please send me an email to aaron AT nissanworks.com. When you placed your order, you provided a bad email address.

Thanks.

For the people that have this installed now, are there any "downsides?" I might be looking into getting this soon and just want to know if the "whistling" is the only thing that may annoy people. Can you feel the difference and has gas mileage dropped a little since colder air=more fuel?

thanks,
dan

I've been wondering about heat transfer. I don't know a lot about this but if the spacer slows down the heat transfer to the intake manifold, does the rest of the engine get hotter? (I am guessing the IM releases the heat up through the hood of the car)

There are definitely no downsides to these spacers. Gas mileage does NOT go down! I am sure about that. In fact, gas mileage will improve slightly. The only reason I don't advertise that is b/c I haven't properly tested it. MPG is a very tough thing to test accurately when you are dealing with small gains of 1 or 2mpg. Anytime that you have cooler air going into the motor, the gas mileage will increase since it's easier for the motor to make the same amount of HP. Also, you are improving the airflow with these spacers, which helps the motor breath easier.

The rest of the engine does not get hotter. The reason being is b/c your engine's cooling system takes care of that. I recorded coolant temperatures during all my testing and the coolant temps were EXACTLY the same as before since the cooling fans take care of regulating that. Anybody with an accurate coolant temperature gauge will be able to determine this just like I have.

Also, I recorded head temps also. The temps of the heads before the spacers got up to 191 degrees after one hour of testing. After the spacers were installed, the temps of the heads got up to 190 degrees after one hour of the same test procedure. So, the temps of the engine definitely stay the same. Since the temps stay the same, no more heat needs to be released through the hood. In fact, since you are decreasing the intake manifold temps by over 40 degrees, the ambient engine bay temps will be lower than before. That will greatly increase the lifespan of all the components in your engine bay.

The install sheet says to only torque the studs to 7 to 8lbs. I don't have a torque wrench which will let me dial in that amount of ft lbs and think I should probably get one. Anyone know of someplace cheap online or in store where I can get one that'll let me dial in that amount?

I bought one a while back. I forget how much it was, but considering I'll take off my wheels (or other people's) several times a year, I figure I need one anyway. Local parts store should have 'em.

You sure the one you have can do 7 - 8 lbs? I haven't seen any that range that greatly usually its 10lbs - 160 or whatever.

from what I remember, yeah... going to check though.

.....

10lbs - 150lbs... wonder what I did then... there's smaller ones at parts stores too. not sure of their range though.

The one I have goes as low as 10 ft-lbs. I also have one capable of in-lbs too. Whenever you need to go below 10 ft-lbs, in most cases, you have to buy one that measures in-lbs. Then you convert the ft-lbs to in-lbs by multiplying it by 12.

10 ft-lbs * 12 = 120 in-lbs

I just had mine installed last Friday. A few points

1. Aaron is top notch to work with. Couldn't ask for any better.
2. The spacer arrived crazy fast.
3. My car feels like it has more power, AC was on, 3kids in back and the wife and it was still pulling strong in 98degree weather yesterday.
4. No whistling or wierdness.

Hopefully I can dyno it soon. Thanks again Aaron!

No, I paid the price of ignorance on this one. But I believe it was worth it. Nissan tech had all the tools and skilzzz to do this one way faster than I could have. He took temp readings before and after. He is sending me the exact numbers in a while but said temp was aprox 40degrees less all across the board as far as the intake was concerned.

I saw a 40 degree average temp drop when I did all my testing. The LIM saw a 30 degree temp drop and the upper intake manifold saw over a 40 degree temp drop even after an hour of dyno testing and idling.

A throttle body spacer is already included in my kit.
