Blind Spot
I don't know where you got such high mileage numbers for me.
I started driving my father's Olds in the summer when I was still 15 years old -- just before my 16th birthday. That gives me 53 years of driving this July-August. If I averaged 10 K miles each year, that would only give me about 530,000 miles. I know it was less than that before I got my own car at the age of 20. It has been higher with retirement (57 K miles on the Max -- I did about 90% of that total or 51 K -- since June of 03 = almost 13 K miles a year + an average of 3 K miles a year on the truck). I certainly could not be over about 750 K miles in my lifetime. But I will try for a better estimate.
- 9 recent retirement years at 16 K a year = 144 K miles
- Last 4 years of work driving at 14 K a year = 56 K
- 31 years of work (taking train to work) at 10 K a year = 310K
- 4 years of college with a car at 12 K a year = 48 K
- 5 years of college/HS w/o car at 5 K a year = 25 K
Total = 583 K miles = my best estimate -- certainly not a million miles for me.

I set the side mirrors just in enough to catch the view of the door handles, and only have to check directly to either sides when changing lanes; I have not had any close calls yet on my part.
I have a small convex mirror on the right side mirror on my Suburban though, just to look out for the little rodent roadsters.
