Strange sound @2500rpm

I have this strange "pssssst" sound when tach passed ~2500rpm in any gear. It sounds like a turbo, but obviously it's not, and it happens only for a second or so, then same thing in the next gear and only under medium/hard acceleration.

I've had similar problem with my 330xi - it came out to be a rubber intake boot hole and I've had a CEL with "system too lean" code. Nothing in this case. Anyone had the same problem??
Thanks

I have a 04 6sp

It sounds like air hissing - could be loss of vacuum somewhere. NO CEL though

Is it coming from the right side under the hood? If it is, I have had the same problem and it's been "fixed" twice, but i still hear it quite loudly from the outside of the car at that exact same rpm you listed. It sounds almost like two thin pieces of metal scraping together if you are hearing what I am. The dealer says it is the exhaust "gusset" and if you are still under warranty, they'll fix it, but otherwise it will cost $50-60. I've had both the intake and exhaust gussets "fixed," but i think one may have come loose as it was replaced around 25k miles ago. Hope this helps.

Could it be the infamous heat shield rattle? Mine could have been mistaken for a "hiss." I only noticed it when the windows were down, but then again, my ears are SHOT!

Does it kind of sound like a "chirp" kind of "pssst"? If so, I have one at around 1500 RPM (I think)... been there for a while, dealer said not to worry about it unless it gets worse.

I did have the heat shield problem, and it was definitely more of a rattle noise than a "pssst" noise. I've also recetnyl had the gusset noise that others have mentioned, and this doesn't sound like it either (it doesn't happen at a fixed RPM, at least not for me).

Good luck, let us know.

I hear my heat shield rattle when I start accelerating. So how do I fix this issue?

Killah,

I'd suggest printing out the info from both links "MaximusX" posted in "my" link and present them to your service writer. My guy accepted them and took care of it out of warranty.

I have the same "squealing" problem in my car also. I have an '04 SL with 68K and I always hear it under the exact same conditions you suggest. I thought it was my belts so I took it into the dealership because I had them replaced not too long ago. They said the belts were tight and when I showed them the noise they said that the noise was because I wasn't running premium. It sounds like BS to me, but I'm gonna try running a couple of full tanks of premium and then going back if I still hear it.

If you power brake, can you still hear the noise at around 2500?

If You're not running premium - You most likely hear valve pinging.
I wouldn't be able to tell You since I have it fixed already and I can't power brake since I have a 6spd.

Veterano,

I'll bet it's your exhaust heat shield. Have the dealer or your mechanic check it out. It's turned out to be a very common problem.

Thats my problem as one of the weld broke on the shield right before the y pipe. The noise was at 2500 RPMs and now I pulled the shield back so it wouldnt vibrate on the metal and there is air leaking there now. Quality from Nissan I tell you. Sounds like an old Chevy. HEeeeeee hawwwwwww

I'll tell You like this: Once the non US car is made in US - the quality suffers for some reason. Las nissan I've had was a 95 Maxima in 98-99 and quality was much better than the one I have now.

I had the dealer take a look around the heat shield for the rattle and he found two broken gussets. He replaced them a couple of days ago and so far I haven't heard the sound again. Thanks betep!

I have this weird whistling noise when i lightly push on the gas, around 2k rpms. It literally sounds like a whistle blowing lightly. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but anyone know what this is and what the fix is?

Do you have a CAI and/or intake manifold spacers?
