Make sure your gas cap is screwed all the way down, other than that, only the code knows...

I gassed up one time with the engine running and the light came on. Stealership reset it for me in 10 minutes. They said it would've reset itself in about 10 startup cycles.

autozone is pretty good they should be able to tell you what it is. Mine was also a gas cap issue. if you get the gas cap issue, screw it on all the way or in my case put the stock one back on if you bought a keylock one. and unplug the battery for about 1 min to 2 min and then hook back up and light will be gone. If it is something else good luck and let us know if we can be of more assistance.

If you want to give me advise....I would love to hear it. Remarks such as "daddy will pay for it" do nothing but stir up trouble and you know it. There is no reason for comments such as those.

Safe mode? I have never heard of that b4. Why is there a safe mode?

When any ecu controlled part malfunctions, the ecu will take over the malfunctioning parts role with a non-variable safe mode setting,so you will not be broke down on the side of the road. Now that the ecu has taken over for the sensor, the variable input from the sensor is now lost, this will cause poor performance/reduced gas mileage/etc.

I'm wondering if an A34 Maxima can use a 5th gen MAF(with transferred IAT) just like the 5,5th gen.... Just a thought

You need an O2 sensor. Bank 2, sensor 1. What year is your car? I'm guessing 05+. This sensor is in the front bank (near radiator), placed in the exhaust manifold.

There are a number of different items you can do to see what's wrong with it. And there are a number of things that can possibly be wrong with it.

Odds are, you need an O2 sensor.

In 1999, two buddies and I all bought the Pathfinders (almost $9K off, who can refuse). We all got the "Check Engine" almost every other years. They brought their cars to the dealers and they changed all sort of $$$sensors. They got sick and left Nissan. I just threw in a bottle of Techcron gas cleaner, tighten the gas cap, reset the light and kept on riving. Hey, if it's bad it would come back. I guess it was just misfire due to bad gas or dirty injector(s). I just bought myself a scanner to see what it actually is the next time. My Pathfinder turns out to be solid as a vault. Not a cent spent on repairs ever, just normal upkeeps, maybe I need to change the front shocks soon (150Kmiles).

I didnot mean to ignore it. If the "part" is was really bad, the Check Engine light would come back up soon. Then I would deal with it differently. Here is something to read for fun:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20761824/
You can bring your car to the dealer with a blank check. Many times the code(s) point to a path which involves many sensors. Certain condition may lead to wrong diagnotic. The chance of getting worse is too little. Maybe your emission isn't great, that's it. Remember the days of old cars without all these sensors. My friend had a Cadillac in college days missing one or maybe two cylinders. My sister was driving the '99Max with the Check Engine on for a few years because the dealer wanted $1200 to change out the 6 coils. Until the time she had to renew the registration w/smog-check, I told her to bring it to my machenic who diagnosed and replaced only one coil for $200.
