E-Brake Light On ......

What's up everyone?!?! Been a while.... but a fellow maxxer needs everyone's expertise. Yesterday while driving to work I notice that my E-Brake Indicator was on. After freaking out thinking I drove with it up....I noticed my e-brake was all the down and I even stopped ....pulled it all the way up.... then put it back down a couple of times to be sure.

No resolve...

I did some searching and the only thing that I found was that my brake fluid could be low??? But this information came from a 3rd Gen forum....

Any ideas??

Thx in advance!

I had a car that would tell you when the pads were low.

Do we have that sensor in the 6th gen Max? I honestly don't know.

All I know is that when the BRAKE light and BATT light flash simultaneously, it's either a bad battery connection or a bad alternator. Doesn't sound like what you described. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

I have had it happen a time or two. Mostly in cold weather. If the handle is down, the brake is off. Done deal, no worries.

FILL UP YOUR BRAKE FLUID! Most likely your pads are low, therefore the pistons on the calipers are extended out alot. Hence, your brake fluid resevoir is probably low due to all the fluid being in the calipers causing your brake light to be on. My .02 or possibly fact...let me know after you check your fluid level.

^^ HAHAHA

Mine does it every once in a while going over the same bump. I don't know what causes it but I pull over, shut the car off, restart and alls well. I dont know whats loose and Nissan couldnt find anything wrong.

What are you laughing at?

Have you checked your brake fluid lately? ...and did you seriously shut your car off every time the light came on? lol

That's typically a BMW feature, I'm sure other car companies do it as well....but I'm pretty sure that Nissan doesn't do it for the Maxima.

y0_nate - You pretty much have your answer in the posts here.

Yes, the brake warning light on the Maxima serves a dual purpose; it lets you know if you are driving with your handbrake on, and it also lets you know if your brake fluid has dropped below a preset level. Since you know your handbrake is not on, then, unless there is an unlikely malfunction in the 'handbrake-on' sensor, this has to be a case of low brake fluid.

As 04MAX_ILLIN and NismoMax80 suggested, this light could also possibly let you know if your pads are wearing thin, because the extra fluid required to move the calipers to reach the thinner pads could (but not necessarily) bring the level in the brake fluid reservoir below the 'brake fluid low' trigger.

I was curious as to all the replies. He stated that the e- brake light is on. But in reality isnt it the brake light? The emergency brake is cable operated. It is inside the hub part of the rotor. So it is actaully a possible problem with his brakes and not e-brake. But as everyone else stated start with checking for brake fluid.

Yep, the light coming on is a brake fluid low indicator.

Can anyone here attest to this ... I just started having this problem two days ago and checked voltage at battery terminals while car is running and had 14.78vdc ... then with car off, battery voltage was 12.98vdc.

It would appear to me that the alternator is working fine.

Like a lot of other people have already stated. You probably just need to top off your brake fluid. I put on new rotors and pads and a couple months later I noticed that my brake light came on and off for a while then afterwards it was on all the time. I picked up some brake fluid and filled it up, problem solved.

Check the connections on your battery. That's all it was for me.

Had the same issue, But somewhat weird. Started the car, came home and on the way I realized the light was on. It wasnt on when I left came home to check the fluid and it seemed fine. got back in to turn the car on and it wouldnt turn on, so I wiggles the terminals a bit and it started up. Terminals seem nice and tight. battery isnt even a year old, optima red top. I do have a grounding kit though, so is it the terminals that need to be changed or is there something really wrong with my braking system?

hehehehehehehe

That is pretty much true...if someone bumps an old thread, then everyone jumps in and calls that person a grave digger, but if someone makes a new thread then everyone jumps in and says GO SEARCH

the org owns everyone

Bumping this one back up hoping somebody can help.

I started a new post yesterday before I saw this one - my brake light is on and I've got plenty of brake fluid.

What else could it be?
