27.6MPG HW and 13 MPG city ?!?

I got 27.6 MPG at 75 mph last week on the highway on cruise control, and this week, with short trips in the city, I get 13 MPG. 13.8 with super slow acceleration tonight.

What the hell? Why am I doing 13.8 city and almost 28 HW?
34 000 miles, new air filter.

I mean, it's 15-30 fahrenheit outside, and I was in some traffic, but still.

Alignment was just done, its dead on. Tires are properly inflated.

What MPG do you get with your 6th gen 5 speed auto? What could explain good HW mileage and poor city? Dirty injectors? Should I run some injector cleaner in the gas tank?

Thx

It's the stop and go flow of traffic you get with city driving as opposed to highway where it's steady for the most part (not accounting for rush hour traffic of course).

because that's how cars work. mostly coasting vs. braking and re-accelerating.

So how come it's advertised at 12L/100km and I get 17-18?

Do you guys put some injector cleaner fluid in the gas sometimes? I remember that it really helped my 92 tercel. Could it help low speed fuel spray pattern and increase MPG?

if your car did not come with all the manuals, they are available online. so many of your questions are explained in them.

Combined (City/Hwy) mileage of about 21 MPG, I'd call that good.

Kryogen - I am getting about the same.

When you think about it, it makes sense. We waste gas by being in lower gears (using more RPMs to cover less distance) and stopping and starting at lights and stop signs much of the time while we are doing city/suburban driving, but stay mostly in high gear and do very little starting and stopping on the highway.

The EPA's 'city' MPG estimate has always been notoriously high for true city driving. It more closely replicates suburban driving with just a little city driving.

Of course, if you are going by the onboard computer's MPG display, don't even look at it while accellerating, even if doing it gently, as that always sucks gas in any situation in any car. Look at it while moving along, neither while accellerating nor while coasting. Both those situation give extreme numbers, not indicative of overall MPG.

You would cry if you had my gas milage with all the mods I have. I am lucky if I get 20mpg on the HW. I don't even pay attention anymore, just fill it up and drive.

First fill up was 18mpg FTL. Supercharger drag = less milage. I'm not whining about it though.

Ok I got 28.5mpg last trip on the highway, which is really good, and

11.7 mpg city. Ok, there has to be something wrong. I'm SUUuuuper slow on the gas, I dont WOT, and I'm not stock into major traffic.... I mean, why am I not getting 15-16 MPG?

What could be wrong? Air filter is new. no CEL.

No, mostly traffic driving for 1 mile, then engine off. Cold temps, and snow on the roads....

So maybe it just reads alot from idling all the time....

Are you going by the car's computer, or are you calculating this MPG yourself?

probably 30 miles. I reset it after a long trip to see what my mpg is in city.

So thats for the last week of city driving. Car computer reading.

Still, I think thats alot, even in city driving.... aint it?

Try calculating it yourself, the computer is not always right.
