Exhaust Note

Something strange happened yesterday leaving work. The Maxima fired up really strong and at low rpms the exhaust is giving a different tone. I never heard it sound like that. I don't know if its good or bad but I'm almost through a full tank of gas and last week after a fill up I used a bottle of STP injector cleaner. I had been using 87 unleaded for a long while.

Did I **** something up with the STP?

Um what does it sound like? Is it like a popping noise? Could be misfiring? 87 Gas is not good for our cars 91 at the lowest. I know gas is killing everone but... Hell I only use 93-94 god 60$ for a tank of gas is nuts..

Must be something in the gas lately, LOL. One person asks about the car and the thread turns into what everybody is paying for gas.

Check for an exhaust leak too... I was driving for months with a busted gasket... it was very annoying, but I finally got it fixed last week.

What do you guys recommend for fuel cleaner? I could probably use this myself.

How many miles are on it, exhaust note starts to get a little throatier with some mileage, I would be careful what fuel injector cleaners you use, from what I read they are pure alcohol and simply just raise internal temperatures to way hotter then they should be to cook out the junk, you have an 04, unless your pissing in the tank between fill ups and driving less then 2 miles a day, fuel injector cleaner is a waste just run premium, and don't ever mention any store bought stuff if you bring it to the dealer, unless they sell it

I've been running premium since day one and drive like you, at those speeds with a quality oil and filter and quality gas your engine can't get any cleaner

True...I just love when you get that good car day, when you step on the gas and you have that exhilarating acceleration at the pedal. I don't get that every day. I put in premium every time, but I think there is better gas out there than others. That's why I thought maybe a fuel cleaner might benefit.

Actually 87 is fine for the car (not that I use it).

From the owners manual, page 9-3
Use unleaded regular gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research octane number 91).

For improved vehicle performance, NISSAN recommends the use of unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI number
(Research octane number 96).

I would stay away from things like STP.

Again per the owners manual page 9-3

Aftermarket fuel additives
NISSAN does not recommend the use of any fuel additives (for example, fuel injector cleaner, octane booster, intake valve deposit removers, etc.) which are sold commercially. Many of these additives intended for gum, varnish or deposit removal may contain active solvents or similar ingredients that can be harmful to the fuel system and engine.

Thank God we are still below $4.00 a gallon for premium in Huntsville Alabama.

I can still get premium for $3.82.

Ok guys, so after I started this thread I went to the service dept. The tech came to me and the first thing he said was "its not a race car" and "its an old man's car". I laughed so hard I almost fell on the floor.

Anyway the cause was a loose bolt on the exhaust near the front. He said at some point the pipe was removed and put back. The only service done that might involve that was the engine was replaced 33K ago. The front is lowered and I have run over some ****,the front lower air deflector was torn off last winter.

That's funny. You should see the faces of people when I travel and get out of the car and they see this almost 62 year old man. lol
