Starter gone bad...?

So for a while my car would act real funny when i started it. This usaually happens when it wasnt running over night or just sitting for a bit. So yesterday i finnally had time to take it to autozone and have them check it.
Battery tested fine, they checked the alternator and that tested fine. Which really only leaves the starter or a loose wire in between here and there. So what i am really asking is if anyone knows about this and knows what to do. Or does anyone know how to get to and fix the starter. Thanks in advance.

Because nothing sucks more than having a great looking car and to see it have trouble starting.

it will either sart up real slow and skip a couple of times. or it would just be dead and id have to turn the key several times to get it going.

I just get 2 new contacts (brushes) and replace the worn ones - usually less than $15. Sounds like yours are pretty worn down which would cause that clicking noise. If the car will not start, you can tap the starter with a screw driver a couple of times. This will get you a few more starts, but not that many. I have not had this problem on the wifes 04, but had it on her previous maximas.

Thanks Burny,
Theres not really a clicking problem. Its more like the engine is trying to start but cannot.
And as far as the starter, do you know how to get to the starter, because I do not. I think that if i were to just replace it the problem should clear because we tested the alt and the battery so its the only other logical option.

First off how many miles does your car have? Where do you get gas at?

When you go to turn on your car does your engine turn and it just doesnt start or when you turn the key do you just hear winding?

Anyway, if you turn on your car and your engine turns but does not start right away you could have a fuel problem, such as fuel pump that is starting to go or a dirty fuel filter.

If you go to turn on your car, and you hear grinding or something spinning but your actual engine does not turn then your starter might be bad as the gears are not engaging with the engine itself or they are stuck.

So if your engine turns but does not start right away have someone tap on the gas tank with a hammer as you are trying to turn on the car. Use the hammer on its side. If this makes the car turn on then you have a fuel pump that is starting to go.

If you go to turn on your engine and the engine does not turn but you hear grinding or something winding like it is turning then give the starter a tap so the it engages with the engine.

Either way these solutions will only work a couple of times, after that you will find yourself tapping away and your car will not start.

Good Luck.

thanks Orlan85,
Ill try both of those.
I dont know if its some much of a fuel pump issue because the car is absolutely 100% fine after its on.
BTW the car has 41k miles and i use whatever gas is the cheapest lol...

Ill see if i can get a vid up for you guys.

go to the dealer if you are within warrenty. get it documented for a later more costly repair. can't go to a gun fight without ammo.

haha nice quote. Nah I don't even know what it is anymore. I really think its gotta be the battery because usually when it does this, ill lock my car and the horn will sound half of what it should be. Im trying to make that vid for you guys.

All...I'm re-starting this post because I cannot create a new thread due to being "new" (for the record i'm not new my original e-mail acct is not accepting password resets from this site).

Anyway.... need everyone's thoughts. The mechanic I go to is telling me $400 total to replace the starter in my car. Is that a good deal? I'm not looking spend $400 right now but I'm assuming if i brought it to the dealership it would be even more to replace..correct?

Car has 70K miles on it.... brand new battery but once you try to start it, it sound like it's dying and on it's last leg when it finally starts.
