Radar Detector Idea [electronic GURUs step inside]

heres an idea ive been thinking about for awhile.... is there a way to seperate the scrren part of the radar and relocate it elsewhere?? would it be just a simple resolder job??

i want to put the screen here in between the passenger airbag screen and alarm light

heres where i want to put it right next to the alarm LED where i drew in a square and thats the size of the screen

heres what i am wondering about would i be able to unsolder the connection points (what the top arrow is pointing too) and solder in some wires to lengthen it and relocate it?? i would also have to relocate the speaker (the bottom arrow) to somewhere above or near my head like inside the lining or behind the eyeglass holder

one thing that i am really concerned about is where i can put the body of the detector with it being out of sight and still have the range that im getting now without it being obstructed, would i be able to put it outside my car and like mount it behind the grille??

Or buy an integrated system like Escort 9500 and Bel RX75? You're going to run into current problem when you add extra solders and wires.

no necessarily.

yes you could do it...in a sense at least...but if you don't know what you're doing it's not worth explaining it all if that makes sense...

fwiw i just have mine at the top of my windshield with the wires extended and hidden. an officer can't see it when i get pulled over and it's out of the way. an easier solution fwiw...

I get what your saying, but explain a little more, thats how I have mine up on the top of the windshield with the countryjoy mount its attatched to the mirror and I have it hard wired to the mirror also but Im looking for a more stealth appearance

Just a idea how about putting it in the grill area and run power and install a small speaker under the steering wheel.

That was my first thought but then I strted thinking about durability, how would the radar endure the outside environment?? How could I seal it up without interupting the function of the radar

Here is what I did, Its not what your looking to do, BUT I figured since we were going thru ideas. I might give my input. I have it hooked so that the detector gets the signal from the optimal point (windshield) and then brings it down to a hidden display in the compartment below climate control. That way this doesn't light up in my face at night when I am driving. and its very stealthy. Most people don't even notice its there.

The shifter gets in the way when the car is in park but clearance is fine when it is in drive, besides who drives in park? Some people may say that Its out of the way as I need to get my eyes off the road to look at it, but I only need to look at it when the thing beeps.

Do Radar detectors still work against the new Laser Radar Guns? I thought for sure that once they shoot you, you are shot.. No bouncing of signals or nothing.

well i know mine detects instant on. but if that's the case you can't do anything about it. if you targets your car and zaps you you're done. no warning nothign you can do slow down it will not matter he knows your speed. it is possible to pick up those signals if he targets a car close to you...but unlikely...

There are websites that compare radar detectors, features, etc. you can visit for more info.

yea if they shoot you then you're shot but if he's aiming at cars ahead of you then it picks it up giving you a chance to slow down should it be the case that you're not the one being targetted

You can get something called a laser shifter. It will take down the laser. Offcourse check your local laws before you do.

Laser is hard to pick up even at cars ahead of you, the beam at max turns out to be like 3 feet wide.

ok here is my 2 cent worth, I wanted to hide wires and hide from officers, so i installed mine on the dash about a half inch from windshield and to the far left frame strut (if sitting in the driver seat). I ran the wire from my cig lighter around back of the radio under the dash to the driver door. Took door seal loose ran wire up beside dash and up to windshield replace the seal (the wire is now hidden) plug into radar get the radar settled then push the wire down along the dash. If needed I can do a "how-to" with pics if needed. Cop can't see it from standing outside of driver window and friends can't see the wires or notice it till it goes off, then they usually say where is it. What ya'll think

^ That's a pretty stealthy setup there...Radardetector.net is really the only radar detector forum I've seen. And goodluck with instant on and laser.

if your gunna cut up your dash man, in my opinion do it right by using a high quality radar detector.i got a valentine 1, and they make a remote display that you might want to look into before you cut up your dash. the detector and that remote display that you can by seprately is a little high....but well worth it..TRUST ME.that remote display might give you some other good ideas on your little project. thats just my opinion though....

you could just put it in the glove box...easily accessible, concealed and cops wont see unless your into the drug where they would actually search your car...

uhhh put what in the glove box? the radar detector? how would it pick up anything in a sealed glovebox? am i missing something?

into the drug? what is 'the drug'

fwiw officers can't search separate sealed locked compartments of your vehicle. thus if you lock your glove box they have to have a warrant to unlock and subsequently open it. that is as long as you're not stupid enough to open it for them when they are screaming at you...

radar detectors don't do any good.

1-once you are tagged either by laser or radar your done. as mentioned above.
2- unless you get a radar/laser jammer (check local state laws) a radar detector is only good to let u know you've been hit, but you'll know when the cop pulls you over.

in my area, city police never have radars on, state troopers use laser (again u get alert when you are shot, which is TOO late).

i have my beltronic radar sitting in my glovebox now (unused) after 2 tickets with lasers. Just my two cents. No more radar for me, now i just keep an eye out where i know there are speed traps.

1. your dumb...
2. they have these new things called antennas...they "supposedly" help with the range and reception or something...but dont take my word for it...
3. cops can search so much more than you think...all they need is suspicious belief... dont go by what your buddies tell you...
4. i meant drug business...chill out

I just got my Country Joy mount for my new BEL 965. I also got the BEL hardware kit smart plug, it will have to do. I more tired of my detectors falling off my windshield and landing on my radio than anything. Suction cups eventually give out.

As far as laser goes, I've only picked up laser 3 times in my life. No ticket or pull over on any of them, so it's possible to pick them up but I don't count on it too much.

I don't have any advice on a stealth install, but if you mount the detector in the grill area you may lose rear detection capabilities.

resoldering all those little connections would be difficult, the easiest way to do it would be with the speaker. as far as sealing it you can wrap the detector in a thin layer of shrink wrap (or saran wrap but i wouldn't recommend it) then you lightly heat it with a flame and it creates a form fitting weather resistant cover.

I just put mine up as high as it can go for better range and hardwired it into by overhead light with 24/7 power. My Radar detector has an auto turnoff. When I hit the unlock on my keyfob, you can here the radar detector turning on also!!!

Not to shabby for hidding wires and having it on all the time, Hidding the wires was my main concern when I was installing mine. See my post ^^^.

Just remember, you can hide a radar detector but the easiest way a cop can tell you have a radar detector is when they light you up and people tend to slam on their brakes. Now unless you live in Washington DC, or Virginia, the only 2 states in all 50 where radar detectors are banned, is it really nessary to try and hide it? Unless you want a clean look!!! When a cop once asked me why I was exceeding the posted speed limit and questioned me about my radar detector, I told him point blank: I was just flowing with the traffic (never admit you were speeding) and that a radar detector for me was a reminder of their ever loving presence and encourages me to keep it slow!!! Actaully it's a true statement, our maxima's can crusie and unless I look down constantly, I don't realize I'm at the 50-80 range on smooth roads or highways!!! I got a warning!!!

That must be a new law:
Hawaii Radar and Laser Jammer laws

Radar laser detectors and laser jammers are legal to own and operate in passenger vehicles in the state of Hawaii.
Currently the only state that it is illegal to operate a radar detector is Virginia and Washington D.C.
Laser jammers are illegal to operate in the states of: Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado and Washington DC.
Radar jammers are illegal to own and/or operate in all 50 states per the Federal Communications Commission.
Radar detectors are also illegal in commercial vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds in all fifty states, per Title 49 Transportation Act.
Radar detectors are also illegal to operate on any military base.
If you are in the market for a high quality radar detector, we would recommend that you check out Radar Roy's testing reports here.

Military bases yes, they must be turned off but not illegal to have..

Yeah, I always tend to get smart with them-ever since I relized I never get off with a warning I just started being an a$$ back to the officers who are to me. However I like that excuse, I might use that. It wouldn't be true in my case as it urs. I admit especially in the 6th gen I get up to 70 w/o a prob even 90 sneaks up on me.

The part with the radar the only reason I try to be discret with it is cops hate seeing them and tend to give more tickets with the person with it. Like I said I always get one anyone though.

Wouldn't you rather have a warning that the FUZZ is out there, just waiting to bust you? Instant-on radar / laser emits a pulse to track your vehicle before pinpointing you and locking down your speed, and laser guns can be detected -- as well as most forms of police radar. Unfortunately it is TOO TRUE that when a laser is used to lock down a specific vehicle it is usually TOO LATE to adjust the speed to within limits. However: It depends upon your area and what your local POLICE Department (*WHOOP-WHOOP*) can afford, but most COPPERS use equipment that can be detected and you can usually benefit from this. An OFFICER is not usually looking for you specifically, but for speeders and other scofflaws. This means he will usually be using a "broad seek" approach, which makes you more difficult to single out and capture. I would rather know that they're out there than just speed blithely along and randomly get SNATCHED by a PIGGY. In other words: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. A radar / laser detector will not prevent ALL tickets, but it will definitely prevent SOME. Note: As an ex-prosecuting attorney I have no dislike for officers of the law -- BUT I F*CKING HATE SPEEDING TICKETS.

bel pro rx75...

the actual detectors are mounted behind the front bumper in the lower grill and one in the rear below the bumper...

a lil pricey but you get what you pay for, vg-2, laser detection, all bands 360... there is also a higher model, that involves laser blocking..but this is sufficient for me..and it fits tight in the lil cubby.. there is a pro pack you can get that adds voice and an additional LED you can mount anywhere...

More old threads...sigh.

But since it's alive again I have always like the bel pro but a grand is a bit pricey!

I saw this and liked it as well, Cheetah GPS Mirror:
The Cheetah GPS mirror is a driver safety system that warns you with voice alerts when you are approaching accident black spots, speed cameras and red light camera intersections. This wide angle rear view mirror has a special anti-glare blue coating and is designed to provide a greater field of vision than factory mirrors. It really opens up blind spots.
