Checking CVT Fluid

Looking under the hood and then in owners manual I do not see a dip stick to check it. I searched this site and found a recommendation to have the dealer check the viscosity of the fluid but that is it. So how do I check it?

its the long tube between the fuse box(next to battery) and the engine cover. it sticks up so you cant miss it. the top is kinda hard to get off so just pull up on it

I thought that may have been it but it felt like it was going to break when I pulled it up so I referred to the manual and nada. Will try it again

take a mini-screw driver or pick and push on the release tab, it secures the dipstick to the tube.

Also, has anyone added a tranny cooler to their CVT transmission (like either B&M or Stillen)?

not done yet

so I got the dip stick out and did not see any writing on the stick except "hot". Since there was nothing in the owners manual I expected to see "check it when hot in neutral..." on the stick. So does anyone know if it should be in park or neutral and what color fluid is acceptable?

Okay, make sure th car is really warm...like been on the highway for twenty minutes. Anything less and you will get a reading of zero. Then put it on flat ground and check the fluid while the car is still running. This will give you your reading.

If you have to add fluid, then take it to the Dealership cause there is a problem.

According to Nissan, the car will tell you when the CVT fluid needs to be replaced, or added. If you need to add CVT fluid to your CVT equipped vehicle then there is something seriously wrong with it.

As far as replacing CVT fluid, could take 50k, could take 150k. Depends on how and where you drive. Have fun, and never let some quickly lube grease monkey touch your tranny fluid.

Based on the lack of info in the owners manual I assume that it tells me it needs to be replaced when I am broke down on the side of the road 3k miles after the warranty ends. This is what I am trying to avoid and want to check it now and make sure it is not going to be a problem.

Well, not much I can say except change it when you feel you need to. For me, I am gonna change at 60k regardless of what the techs say. On that note, changing CVT is $$$. I bought a litre to have just in case and it cost me $40.00 Canadian. Do the math for how much our tranny takes and you can see that it is expensive.

As to when to change the fluid, hard to say. My Dealer tells me that they can test it to see when it needs to be changed. He also said that he couldn't give me a firm time-line when to change, which, like you, makes me uneasy. So, I am gonna just change it at 60k and be done with it.
