5.5 Gen Start-Up vs. 6-Gen Start Up

I'm a little nervous about my new '06 Max I just bought from a dealership. I traded in my '02 Max with 147K miles and felt it was time to step into the 6th Generation Maxima world.

Problem is...I notice that the '06 Maxima start-up sound is a lot different from the start-up sound from the '02 Maxima. Is this supposed to be the case. It sounds as if something is almost making a whining noise ONLY when it starts. There have been no other issues to date such as when revving in idle or when driving on the highway. Car sounds fantastic in every situation except when it starts it makes me nervous. I'm at a little less than 31K miles so I need your thoughts being a new 6 Gen owner. Do I have something to worry about?

congrats on the ride, i would take it back to the dealer where you bought it from, tell them your concern and let them hear it...Did you buy it from a nissan dealer? if you did it should have some type of warranty

Thanks....i'm glad to be on board with a newer Maxima. I absolutely love the car so far. Huge difference between the 5.5 gen and the 6th gen. I'm a big fan. This time I'm staying away from mods. Just going to keep it stock all around. The 18"s it came with are sick. I was trying to get them on my 5.5 gen a while back.

Anyway....I picked up the car at a Toyota Dealership. I have a limited warranty...3 Months/3000 Miles. So here's my plan...I brought it to their service today...told them about the issue...and i'm having them check it out.... i'm sure they will come back and say it's fine. So my next move will be to bring it to a trusted mechanic my family knows and get his opinion. If he says something is up with it I'll just have him write up a report and then I'll bring it back to the dealership since I'm under warranty.

I think I'll be covered at the end of the day. Thanks for the help though. If the issue doesn't go away I'll post a VID and then get everyone's opinion on here....

Do you have the A/C or defrost on when you start it? I think our cars have that kind of whine sound to them.

which one is 06 Maxima 5 AT or 6MT??

If 5 AT is feel fast start up engine only 0 60 mph in 4.9 sec! (Only "ONE"Mod on K&N Filter!)

if 6MT i never see/touch for before!

my bro was use 02 max gle 4at w/163,XXX miles's transmission 4at is not feel speed cuz my bro told me that he start 1 gear to 6600 rpm, he shift 2gear only start at 4000 rpm? he said 4at is bad! and 05 ax 5at only 5000 rpm. its gain 1000rpm that 02-03 max 4at. not me he said, but i love his car 05 MAX 3.5 S in the world !!!

my bro told me that he (He have 05 max 3.5sl 5at) was 100% beat 04-06 max 6mt!

I had an 02 Max SE and stepped up to my 04 Max SL 4+ years ago and it does make a different noise on startup. Most have speculated that it is the timing chain and its part of the "normal" operation of the 6th Genmax. Since you are new to the 6th Gen have them take a look at it and keep an eye on it but I think its probably the normal startup noise.

i don't think it's the timing chain tensioners. with the tensioner issue, the whining noise isn't noticeable during engine start up. but yeah, take it back to the dealer and have them look at it.

A couple things to watch for is the Battery life and the original Goodyear tires had a recall a while back.

Thanks for the responses guys. I brought the car in this morning and they just got back to me. They said that it needed a new Starter. Isn't this something that they would've checked before selling me the car? During the sale, the dealer showed me a laundry list of maintenence that was performed on the car by the dealer before re-sale, so it's a little interesting as to why the Starter wasn't included in the work that was done.

So I'm picking the car up in a little bit.... Like I said earlier...the car is great...low mileage....so fast...I love it. I'm glad to be in the 6th gen family now up from the 5.5 Gen. I just hope nothing else is wrong.....

But like "mynameispee" said, "probably worn secondary timing chain tensioners, get that addressed ASAP.".....<--- I'll address that to the mechanic just in case and then head back to the dealer since i'm still under warranty.

Do you guys think overall the car is ok? Is this something that generally happens 30K miles in on the life of the car? Or is this just a taste of things to come?
