For my 5.5 gen I use Mobile 1 Full-Syn 10W30 every 3.5k with Mobile 1 Filter. Its expensive, but I feel its better in the long run. I buy a pack of 6 quarts at Costco for about $5.50 per quart.

An engine should be broken-in before using synthetic (unless it was built FOR synthetic). Good choice to make him your ex-mechanic

I have an oil-cooled turbo in my Sup, so picking the right oil is very important. Here is a link to oil education in layman's terms:
http://www.supramania.com/aehaas/

So my pick for oil for my Sup and the Max is Pennzoil Platinum. Apparently Mobile1 had a good synthetic product, they made a change a few years back to the additive pack, and now its rated under the Pennzoil Platinum on supramania forums. German Castrol is the top pick, but not easy to find in my area, so I'm going with Pennzoil.

No one mentioned oil filters. The Frams are trash. Mobile1, Wix, and K&N are highly rated, but, if strapped for cash, the Wal-Mart brand filter got a very good rating as well. I'm using the Mobile1s.

I just went to about 5 different places looking for Castol Edge 5w/10w/15w 50 oil and the only one who even carried Edge was Checkers. They only had 5w30 and 10w30 so I decided to go with Mobile1 15w50. Went to buy 5 quarts which would have come out to $50, but when I got the the register the lady told me to get a Mobile1 filter and the total cost for everything would be $36. Of course, duh. The filter alone was $13 so I saved about 45% off retail price with the instore coupon. Not sure if you guys have this going on at your stores but worth the savings IMO. Ohh and 15w50 is the most expensive type Mobile1 has, about double the cost of 5w30. Went home put it in and started the car right up no problem. The sound of the engine quieted down quite a bit and you can tell the performance was better. Might have to buy my oil offline next time.

I looked into changing from Castrol Syntec to Amsoil actually. The problem is Amsoil does not make a filter for a 6th generation Maxima yet. You can change your oil all you want, but if the filter isn't changed it is pointless. I don't know of any other "Sythentic" oil filters out on the market, so far I am using the best available for where I am which is a Fram Tough Guard. I'm going to see if NAPA has a synthetic oil filter for my Maxima sometime.

There are many different filters out there that can be used. Your oil brand does not need to be your filter brand.

Thanks Nissan,

Yeah I just learned to change it myself. Much MUCH cheaper and I can make sure it's done right with no slacking. I'm gonna take your advice and continue using the synthetic; just am uncertain if I will stick with Mobil1 or Castrol. Thanks though!

Advanced Auto is running a 5 quart M1 plus a M1 filter for $29.99 deal until end of September. The M-108 filters sell for about $13 alone.

Local Nissan dealer service writer told me they have a lot of customers who favor their own non-Nissan oil brand and, rather than try to stock all the brands, or lose the business entirely, will change customer furnished oil & filter for $13.00 labor only charge.

Of course not, but the thing is the oil filter that is rated for high mileage should be used. The ones I currently have access to are only rated for 5K (3100+ miles). I was told that I shouldn't use the Fram tough guard filters with amsoil because they are not meant to run for 10-12K (62K-74.5K miles). Believe me I have been literally itching to put in Amsoil/royal purple due to the service life, and I typically put on about 500 kilometers (310 miles) every week. I don't mind changing oil but i'm literally doing it every 2 - 2 1/2 months even worse when I do a road trip to the US.

Huh? Of course they make an oil filter for the 6th Gen. Shoot talkinghorse a message. I've been running with an Amsoil EaO filter for this whole cycle.

Yes, Amsoil has a filter for the 6th gen!

Who have you been talking to that fed you that info. Well, ask again. Shoot talkinghorse a message. He will give you enough info. Not just try to make you buy Amsoil.

I am already in the process of ordering my first batch of Amsoil products from him. I am getting ASL 5w30, Amsoil Ea filter, their nano air filter and their wix cabin filter. Along with my order, I am getting theamsoil Pi and the amsoil engine flush. This is a real conversion to Amsoil. I still have 4k more to go on my current M1 EP 5w30. Will change it at 7500.

Guys just use oem Nissan filters you really cant get any better then that unless you feel like shedding out alot of cash for the amsoil filters.

Do you have a part number? The store I was about to pickup some Amsoil from said they didn't have the part number. I also checked Amsoil's website and they didn't have it listed. The part number for fram is "TG6607" for the tough guard which is rated for 5K.

Castrol EDGE rebate

There is a $10-$15 Rebate:
http://www.castrol.com/liveassets/bp..._all_other.pdf
If you still have receipt for current purchase, it should still applies.

the 15w50 mobile 1 I have put in is operating quite nicely. fast as before startups and seems like it runs smoother and deffinitly quieter. I had Mobile 1 10w40 in before. Maybe this will be my Hawaii oil. temp really never changes here typically 80+/-15 degrees year round.

well was burning 1-2 quarts of oil every 3k miles figured this would help prevent that. I am well within the temp rating for this oil, and will switch if it becomes an issue or when I move to a cooler climate.
