The 6speed manuals are so rare and undesirable that Nissan wasn't making any money on them. It's not only with Maximas but with almost every car. Have you looked at dealer inventory for BMW 3 and 5 series? Audi also got rid of the manual in the A6.
I'm gonna try to keep my 6th gen Maxima running for as long as I can because I have a feeling that me next car will be a slushbox, and not by choice.

It is a reflexion of the new generation, they no longer have time to drive using 2 hands, they need one hand free to operate ipods, cell phones, blackberries, and gadget, gadget, gadgets!
Yes my friends we have come to a point when it's more important to finish a Text than down shift when coming to a stop or going around a curve!
But on the flip side, having a 6spd does not make you faster because you still have a human behind the wheel who's capable of screwing things up!

I think the accidents in the "Unintended Acceleration" in Toyotas could have been avoided if people still drove manuals. If your accelerator gets stuck, then shift into NEUTRAL!!!! DUH!!!!
Kind of like when the batteries on the remote control die, people don't remember that there's an on/off button on the television set.
I love my '06 Maxima SE 6-Speed. It has the elite package & of the few manuals that were built, there were darn few that came loaded up like mine. Besides, how many people have heated steering wheels in their cars. When this car gets old I might just have it reconditioned instead of buying a new car. It is very fast too.

This winter my heated steering wheel was a godsend!!!
so im having serious tranny issues with my 5 speed auto 04, does anyone know how to change the 5speed to a 6speed and how much it costs or should i get the 5speed replaced
Try searching something like transmission, might pop up with the answer you need. But, it's probably going to be in the 3 - 4 thousand range and probably higher.
Cool to have a rare car ,but as far as the 6sspd transmission in my car it sux I wish I bhought a Automatic , all my cars were standart a6,passat,corrado and comparing to those this is a workout. The positive is Save gas, burn rubber even in 3rd gear and the feeling when you go fast.
Even though I have the Auto. The thought of a faster option is always nice.
How can a vehicle be known as powerful without good track times. Powerful doesn't mean the biggest car or the highest model. Even more HP doesn't make a car the fastest on the block. 4DSC=6speed........

Funny this thread is still going, I have to admit though this 6 speed is a pain in the ***, I miss shifts in this car more then any of past 5 speeds. The shifter mech that Nissan did is really primative for a 2004 car. I feel like the shifts are sloppy and clunkly. It also feels as if the car is too heavy for a 6 speed. I really dislike the FWD, I have a ad out there on craigslist for a trade on infiniti G series with 6 speed, just seeing what pops up.

Why does everyone think this car is a race car? I drove a sports car and that car I drove was meant to track speeds. This car is luxuary car, period. It's a better daily drive then my sports car was, but that's were the difference is.

I have and 2005 Maxima 6 speed Manual, love my baby. Handles very well. Need a tranny
I cant find a transmission. It wont go in reverse. Everything else is fine but the reverse gear and I'm having trouble finding another tranny.

Good luck, great find, and welcome to the 6th Gen family!
I bought a 6 speed in 2003 when they 1st came out with the back then new color Radiant Ember (burnt orange) and after years of missing it, I recently purchased one in gun metal grey from my cousin for $700. It's a weekend fixer upper project car for me. I have a M37xS with the paddle shifters for a manual feel, but it's definitely not the same thing 😕

It also has alot to do with how you drive... my maxima easily is my favorite car I've ever owned, as well as the greatest source of stress and depletion of my finances...Ive owned mine 3 years and have driven it a little over 10k miles in that time....which should tell you how much it's been parked for repairs.
When I bought my 07 max...I could swap basic parts, but had no idea about engine trouble, but I've had to do so much work myself, that I had to learn basic auto mechanics to keep up! I had to replace the timing chain guide my self, while far from home, broken down on the side of the road...having no experience doing work of that scale, it was completely overwhelming, but there was no choice...it was either I succeeded, ended up getn towed, or giving up and selling it to pick n pull...all in all, it took me over a month...just breaking the nut on the harmonic balancer took 3 days of trying everything known to man, and herculean amounts of effort.
I still feel that I've been cheated by You tube, because I've watched so many fukn videos, especially on getting the timing right, I feel that they should have cut me a check!!
I don't know WTF I would have done without You tube, or Maxima.org
I feel as if I've earned the right to own this car, and even still.....no sooner I fix one thing, and something else goes out...
my very first Nissan was a 97 Sentra that had over 200k on it....I got 34 mpg , uphill downhill over dirt roads, stop n go didn't matter...I couldn't kill that car....
**** Renault...**** Renault...**** Renault....
I can only imagine how some of the old timer Nissan engineers that were there when it was still Datsun , must hurt in their hearts to see what became of Nissan...
But, the VQ35DE is a BADASS powerplant, and I don't regret everything Ive learned although I wish someone would have warned me.... I guess I'm going to write a thread to any maxima newcomers...the advice I would have wanted to hear about what to expect....
if they are that rare would it not be easier tear down the trans and see what part is broken first? what other cars did the 6 speed go in to? how frail and dainty are the 6 speeds?
