I have purchased some clips from the dealer, just in-case i break one. I am thinking of doing gloss black paint though. This week end looks good for me will post pics.

Absolutely, a lot of people opt to paint their "chrome" roof strips. It lasts longer and won't fade as fast compared to tape or vinyl.

 

I just did these moldings new from nissan ($85 each at cost!!) you'd have to do something really stupid to break the windshield. I wish I thought of this mod, that seems much more cost effective and eliminates the tarnished chrome problem entirely.

 

I'm going out on a limb here, but I think the guys that ended up with damaged windshields used the windshield as leverage when trying to pry their strips off of the car.

I got to give you mad props! Looks good as hell! Good job! Now the question I have is you said that you only had one clip per side and the rest of it is glued down ? I thought they slid out from clips?? And are try very fragile, I'm not worried about breaking clips since I could buy more at the dealer but if the strip is so fragile it could break or bend out of shape easily then I won't remove them. I am probably goin to black mine out this weekend but I want to avoid any needless headaches.. Thanks but good **** once again!

I think you misunderstood what I said. The roof strips are clipped onto the car. The clips holding the roof strips are glued to the rain channels in the roof of the car. When I was popping the roof strips off of the clips, two of the clips (one on each side of the car) came unglued and popped off of the car. I was able to glue the offending clips back onto the car. There are 5-7 (don't remember) clips per roof strip.

 

This a great looking mod. I agree that the painted version will hold up longer depending on weather and wear. Not sure what the life span is of the taped versions. Give it a year or so and then take a look at the appearance. Either way, they do make a difference.

 

I'm heading into my second winter with mine, and they look just as good as the day that I put them on.

 

Opps my bad man.Lol.Yeah the black out tape was really easy to install.I took it to my paint guy and asked him how much he would charge me to colour match it with my Satin Black and he said like $300 becuase it's chrome,it's time consuming and he have to prep it properly for it to last.

This dude I use to know told me about the black out tape and I went and picked it up for no more than $10 and installed it myself.Took about 25mins to do the whole thing.Save myself a lot of $$$$$

I agree.It's less preping,easy to install,and if it does get damaged you don't have to remove the chrome strip,sand it,or tape up your whole car just to re-do it.

It's a very cheap and effective mod.Painting requires too much sanding and scuffing.Remember it's chrome so you'd have to prep it properly or it will flake or crack.

 

But what you didn't notice is that it is an empty container that I was using to hold the clips...

 

I guess I'm going out to buy 3M Perfect to polish my '05 Max roof chrome rails because of oxidation/discoloration. But it also has some peeling in places and you can see shiny chrome underneath

The roof rails on my car are flaking/peeling in some places, showing shiny chrome underneath, and the rest is discolored.

Can i just buy chrome type tape? Any advice would be appreciated.
I live in a hot, sunny, salt-water climate.

I'm planning on buying chrome handles, chrome rail along the bottom of the window ledge, and a new chrome grill (billet?) for when I get the car painted and some dents fixed.

Chrome accents is very popular where I live and I like it when the person doesn't go overboard.

 

The chrome tape should work fine. I've never used it, so I have no idea how it will hold up over time.

 

I found some sellers on Ebay for chrome trims I've been looking for and for the chrome tape, but it's going to be awhile before I do the exterior. I have to finish mechanical problems first, which at this time is more important.

 

Why does the plasti dip look grey, & not black?
Is 1 can enough to do 2 roof strips with 4, or 5 light coats each?
I like the blackness of the blackout tape better, but it looks a lot harder to do/more time consuming.

Do you leave a little bit of plasti dip over both sides of the strip including the windshield, and the front section that dips upward? Does the plasti dip pull off clean in the front section that is not level like the rear area?

 

My paint has finally started wearing after a few years. Clear is almost all chipped off on the top. Along windshield it is "cracking" horizontally. I originally paid for blubat vinyl strips, but after several shipments of strips that were too short and wavy, I decided to paint. Looked great. But now I seriously am thinking just electrical tape! I'll check out pepboys for the black out tape to see if it's any better.

Unless someone can recommend a solid clear coat that can withstand sun damage, (which my Krylon claimed to but failed) I see it as a continuous maintenance issue. No permanent fix.

 

What's the easiest way to remove the molding to do this?

 

I used the yellow nylon pry tools from Harbor Freight. Just be very careful up around the windshield. Also, some of the guys mentioned that they broke some clips doing this...I didn't, but I did have 2 clips pop off of the car. They are glued into the rain channel. I just set them back in with some epoxy.
