Motor oil in Manual Tranny
Motor oil in Manual Tranny
ok heres the issue im having my syncros replaced in my tranny and i heard that the GL5 gear oil ruins them so ill probly end up getting GL4 amsoil 75w-90. buttt..... the mechanic doin this says he always puts sythetic 5w-30 motor oil in the trannies he rebuilds??? so whats the people thoughts about this????
i dont really like the idea either but i pretty broke now im having a new engine installed and tranny syncros replaced and im short 400 and still need to buy the gear oil for the tranny...
whats the recommended gear oil for it again?

And that is why your mechanic rebuilds allot of transmissions, you are correct that you should not use GL5 in the Max it requires GL4 (gear) oil, and not engine oil. GL4 has extreme pressure additives that motor oil does not have, the same oil lubricates the differential gears as well as the transmission. Nissan sells theirs for $11.00 a quart or AMSOIL or Redline also have GL4, you only need four quarts and will have some left.
wow thanks i really appreciate the input, now im just having problems searching for the reverse syncro ill have to go to nissan for that :/
o and i decided to buy the tranny oil at nissan for 11 a quarts thanks

isn't it too low of a weight for a tranny, I wouldn't do it.
