Transmission problem in the 2000-2800 rpm range..

I've recently been consistently getting a sort of ticking/rattling sound coming from the engine bay, heard much more with windows down obviously, between at 2000 rpm up until close to 3000...of every gear....it doesn't happen in any other range. Can anyone identify an obvious problem? Thanks.
