well hopefully you bought it within the last 3k miles or so. If you are changing the oil for the first time at 108k miles, then there is something wrong and I recommend taking it to a dealer to get the oil changed. If not, you will need 4 and a half quarts of oil. Winter in nearing and if you use Synthetic, I recommend 10w40 or 15w50 Mobile 1 Synthetic. If you don't use Synthetic, don't start. You are too late in the game to switch over. If that's the case I recommend using Penzoil High Mileage.

As for transmission fluid, I believe you have a CVT in your car, you need to go get it changed at the dealer or a transmission shop that specializes in CVTs. I don't think you can change the fluid out at home. Don't own a CVT so can't help you there.

For the CVT, it is about 6qts to drain and refill or about 12qts to flush through the transmission cooler line. The drain plug is a #10 allen wrench. Use only Nissan NS-2 CVT Fluid(for warranty and save receipts) though aftermarket alternatives are available. After the warranty runs out on my 07, then i will try other fluids besides the Nissan fluid.

why do you recommend a 10w40 for winter.. won't a 5w30 be better?

well I actually run 20w50 for summer and 15w50 for winter here in Washington state. I know it sounds too thick. It works a lot better. This engine runs extremely hot and that means it breaks your oil down more. Most European cars run 20w50 and 15w50. I found that I don't burn as much oil, and the car is much quieter. Startups are pretty much the same. Don't have to sit and wait to warm the car up. If you look in your manual, it says you can use 5w30, 5w40, 10w30, and 10w40. Remember Nissan makes cars not oil. They also had a huge problem with the Altimas 2.5 burning up because people didn't check their oil often enough and they went bone dry. They did a recall on them, I think that was back in 04-05. That is why I looked into what oil I needed. I was burning about 1-1 and 1/2 quarts every 3k miles. Now I don't see even 1/2 quart gone every 3k miles.

To the op , where are you located at , if in the northern US , use M1 5w-30 for winter , it s what Nissan dealerships put in , & used all year long no problem . & it s what I use also with no issue .

It s for yah , if you use thicker oil which is fine , it makes less MPG but it depends on you .

Always thought lighter oils for coder climates and vice versa for warmer climates.

NS-2 vs NS-3

Can I put the NS-3 transmission fluid to the 2007 Maxima SL instead of NS-2 stated in the owner manual?

I would keep using NS-2 fluid since its still in production and Nissan hasn't said that NS-3 fluid will be replacing NS-2 fluid

NS-3 fluid is low viscosity (designed for newer CVTs) so I doubt it'll be backwards compatible with older CVTs which weren't designed for low viscosity fluid
