04 engine removal withou trans can it be done

Can I pull the motor out from the top of the car leaving the trans in place. I know most remove tranny and engine from under the car. Do not have axcess to a hoist so can I do it fromup top leaving in the tranny ?

As someone who has done this job 5 times I can tell you it would be much harder to do it that way. It will be even worse going back in. I highly recommend you just pull your axles and shift cables and drop everything out the bottom. The motor, trans, and cross-member can be easily dropped out the bottom in one piece. Once its out you have easy access to do the rest. Get a hoist.

You could just drop the tranny from below and then hoist the engine out. The tranny itself isn't that heavy assuming you have a tranny jack to work it from underneath and I don't mean on the lift. I think the biggest problem with pulling the engine with the tranny still in place is the spindle that slides into the engine is just long enough to be annoying. You would have to loosen the mounts on the tranny anyway to get it to tilt enough.

You're probably better off just pulling the whole thing one shot.

Are you planning to do this on your own? I'm just asking because a certified mechanic would know if this is possible or not

It's possible, but reasonable, feasible? I'd say no. FWD 60º V6 isn't very friendly for that.

Get or rent a hoist like bryan163 said.
