Sudden MPG drop on my Max

Hi guys,

I almost got a heart attack when I checked my on-board MPG. From 17-18 MPG that I used to get, I only get 14.5 -15 MPG. Once I go on the highway driving 60-65 MPH MPG barely climbs, after I get off the highway to my home (which is 5 mins off the highway) it drops back to 15 mpg. Next time I drive off with the cold engine it drops even more to 13.5 mpg and after the highway goes back to max 16mpg. Where 17-19 MPG was a reality in past, now it is a dream. I have not made any mods on the car, only got the oil changed 500 miles ago. Any ideas what could cause this bad mileage drop?

I want to say that i think that the trip computer is not accurate. I get these fluxuation frequently. The waether and quality of the processed gasoline has to do with it.

Try a different gas station next time. You use on 91-93 octane right?

on the above.

Calculate your real MPG by hand...don't trust the computer.

Winter
was my 1st thought.

What MPG do you get when you calculate the math yourself? when did you last reset the car MPG? it does an overall average since last time reset. Not current MPG.

And probably you don't know where to reset it...Next time when you're on the freeway checking your MPG,make sure you press and hold the "Trip Reset" button till you hear a beep.Wait a few seconds and you'll get your current MPG.You'll get a LOTTT more than 17-18...And trust me there will be no heart attack symptoms anymore... You'll live a LOTTT longer

I am also having the same issue. I have reset my MPG and it still dropped to 14mpg. now it has slowly been loosing mile per gallon a day. I only get gas at one gas station. The same place Ive been going for years. I recently replaced my radiator and alternator. I'm wondering what can I do to improve the MPG. My tires are inflated properly. I'm thinking of changing spark plugs wires and air filter. Is there anything else I should change?:co nfused:.

As long as you are getting about 300 miles per tank, I wouldn't worry too much about it. These are not Camry's.

Those with the MPG below 20, how often do you see the RPM hit 3000 or higher? If your drive to keep it below 3000 at all times you should easily see 20+

The way I see many driving, I'm surprised people get over 15 mpg

I only use premium 91, correct.

Problem Solved!

Hey guys,

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. Sorry for my delayed response, I was out of the reception zone.

Recently my left front tire was low on pressure, so I went to the gas station and bring it on pressure again. Two days later I noticed that it's low again. I went to Expert Tire and was informed that I had a nail in it. This explains a lot. Not only I have now a better traction in rainy weather (especially), but also my MPG (I drive mainly in city) went up to 17.8-18.5 MPG (I am picking up my girlfriend on the way to campus, and the car is idling for at least 5 minutes every day, so accurate MPG is hard to determine). If you are curious, I got Firestone Firehawk's 18" (right now only in front), and KUMHO 18" in the rear. Of course I get the oil, filter and other regular changes done to maintain the vehicle run properly.

By the way, I do NOT get the gas from same station every time, although I have a favorite. On a full tank the on-board computer indicates over 300 MTE.

Problem solved!

My pal has a 02 Pathfinder, he gets 8-9 MPG and he is not a furious driver. No good.

Pretty sad that it has a VQ35, like your 06 Maxima. My 08 has an excuse since it has the VK56. Wow.

Damn, I have to think that some of you drive the **** out of your cars, redlining every gear to get the mileage that some of you guys say you get.

I run 87 octane usually. Maybe once every other month or so I might fill it up with 93 but I always get 24-26MPG regardless of what fuel I run. I calculate the MPG myself but the computer is always pretty close...usually within 1mpg
