Transmission Swap

I have an 04 SL with the RE4F04B transmission and I'm about to have to change it. I found a super low mileage RE5F22A...My question is...can I swap the 5 speed in, in place of the 4 speed. Before you ask, I've done all the troubleshooting...my transmission is done, it's dead. I just need to know if it'll work. Plus I really want a 5 speed A/T

Mainly for the 5th gear, 4 gears suck. I'm planning on beefing the transmission up anyway.

The 5speed has it's own issues. If you can fix them before install you should be good. You will need more than just the transmission though. I would consult a professional on this one. I would be guessing with any advice on my part. Good luck and be sure to post if you do with parts and experiences.

@OP. Just being curious. What actually went wrong with your 4speed? Or, what did you do against it?

The tranny started slipping out of first into second, from 2-3, 3-4 it was fine but from 4-3, 3-2, 2-1 it had a bad lag. Started throwing P0780 codes and finally it stopped going from 2-3 and it barley goes from 1-2. The fluid is burnt with clutch shavings in it. I'm assuming it's the valve body but it has 181k on it. I'm planning a huge build on it. I'm boring out the motor to a 3.8 and replacing every moving part on the car.

Might want to consider getting the Rostra solenoids vice the transgo kit. Seems to be the easiest option as of right now and not so much a bandaid as the transgo kit was.

Ok, thanks. I've seen a few writeups in them. These cars weren't ready to be released, between the leaky power steering, plastic timing chain guides/tensioners and the transmission issues these cars are nightmares... With NO worthwhile recalls

One of the rare occasions that I hear the 4speed go bad. But then it seems with 181k its burnt fluid was the one that originally left the factory. Go ahead with your swap; I support it if you pull through, for let it be said our 5speed is, at the best of times, a most smooth and quiet transmission.

I'm not familiar with the ecu swap though. They make SL's with the re5f22a so I'm guessing I'll have to get one of those ecu's and get my key programed to it

4spd is better. Are you ready to swap computers and cut up the wiring harness... I swapped mine to a 6spd. 4spd auto with shift kit is bulletproof. Add a trans cooler and amsoil.

I would have to agree. I think sticking with the 4 speed would be the best way to go. Get a shift kit and call it a day. I don't hardly even use my 5th gear. I drive mine in Tiptronic mode all the time and sometimes will go to 5th on the highway.http://ujue5.xspw3.servertrust.com/L...800-9000p.html probably the best you will find out there.
