Replacing an automatic transmission is simple. You can do it in one weekend easily working slow, seriously.

What type of transmission do you have?

I am having the exact same issue. My regular mechanic told me the transmission would have to be rebuilt. ($2400.00)

I went to a transmission specialist. They said that it was an electrical issue. He replaced a "relay" but the issue came back. He said it may be an ignition switch or something else but not actually the transmission.

That all was wrong. Turned out to be my camshaft sensor. I changed the top one today. It took about 30 minutes and I also bought the rear one. Total parts was $140.00. Still better than $2400.00 for a new transmission.

im having the same issues with my 2006 maxima SE, I was at a red light, it turned green and next thing I knew, my car was not moving in any gear, if my life counted on it. but if my car sat over night, started up cold it would go into gear until vehicle warmed up. im not sure if my issues are camshaft sensors, or valve body/solenoids failures?
I need help really bad. thanks everyone.

I would go and purchase a cheap OBDII Scanner, even though Nissan uses a CAN I system. You can get one for $50.00. Connect it to your car and see what it finds. You can get them at any auto parts place.

See what codes it finds and then replace those sensors it says are bad.

That is your Camshaft Position Sensors. The reason I can tell you that is because of your symptoms. If it works when cold, but not when hot, then that makes the most sense. The Sensors go into the engine and if they are cracked, then the crack will not make them expand/open up until warm or hot. That is what happens to these sensors. Oil/gas mixture gets in them and messes them up.
