Definitely start by checking for 12 volts at the headunit (radio). If the 12 volts is there when the headunit is not working, connect a ground wire to the headunit. If still no sound, the headunit is bad.

If you need to ask more questions, we need to know:
1) year of your car
2) Bose or non-Bose radio
3) factory navigation or not

Have you hooked up a ground wire to the metal case of the head unit? Unplugging the battery cable sounds like the electronics has gotten "locked up" and unplugging the battery cable resets it.

I hate to tell you this, but if all you get are the display lights and no sound after you unplug the battery cable, I think the head unit is bad.

Try that ground wire. It doesn't cost anything. But I am still thinking the radio is bad.
