[Solved] I think something is missing from my battery cable!

Hi all,

2007 Maxima SE. I pulled the battery out because it was dead (It was tested as going bad and wouldn't turn the car over the other day). So I went to put on the new one and saw this. I checked a video or two and this appears to be a 2nd battery cable that should have a loop on the end that fits around the battery terminal. Is this fixable? I don't see the missing part anywhere so it might be down in the engine or something could have been "fixed up" for it to work. I got the car 2nd hand and this is the first time I've had the battery off. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Try to follow it. I'd guess it was for a stereo system.

No, it's a thick cable that goes into the harness. It's a thick cable.

Ah, I found another video which seems to show what the problem is. It looks like there's a connector that slots onto the exposed metal piece. It must have got pulled off when I extracted the battery. I don't see it anywhere. I'll have to take a better look when it's light or maybe just have my wife run to the dealer and get one, they can't be expensive.

Yeah, it corroded off, the top bold is what's holding that sucker on. You need a new cable end...

Time to get creative. Go to the store and buy a new ring terminal and a tool to crimp it if you don't have anything.

Ahhh, I see it now. OK. That should be something I can fix easily enough. I'll just have to see if the bolt is still there so I get the right size. Thank you.

It's incredibly difficult to find the correct connector. I got one from Autozone but it's far too shallow to take a decent grip and it needs to be bent, which is difficult without bending the body of the connector. I think I've just about got it - I was replacing the battery terminal connection too but they gave me the wrong one. I think I'll just clean up the original.

All fixed and I only have 2 bits left over. One of the 3 screws to hold the bottom of the battery tray in place, not sure if the thread was damaged but decided I can do without it (had to remove it because some pliers fall into the most inaccessible part of the engine!) and the tray the battery fits on - and no way I'm taking that out again, ever. If the battery dies, I'm charging it and selling the car lol.
