Dude wheres my car? 10maxi 117miles

Cv axle output shaft seal on passenger side replacement project and this spring popped? Whats it for? why did it break upon removing old seal, how do i install the new one?? I have all parts ready for install n im waiting on info bout this spring?!?! Dang....
