Rust Alert - Check you vehicles

I found early signs of rust inside the drain channel between the rear window and the trunk seal, also down under the black plastic cover just above the left rear light. Took it to the dealer, they are going to repair and repaint the entire channel. The service manager said that mine is not the first, so all should check those areas. Mine is sliver so it was easy to see. It may be more difficult to detect on dark colors so look very carefully. I'm pretty pissed, that this could happen so soon.

This is most surprising. I think the Maxima has a long-term rust guarantee, and I'm thinking it may be five or ten years. Something is obviously very wrong here. Scary that the dealer has already seen this on other '09s. How is the moisture getting behind the paint?

I'm pretty surprised too. I know they have a good rust warranty.

I will post pictures of the area of concern as soon as I get the chance. As I stated in the initial post, it is early signs (discoloration and micro flaking), not a big patch. But if untreated, we know how the story ends. I only saw it because I was detailing the car. And when I do that every crack and crevice gets cleaned.

The camera may not be able to pick up the blemishes, but at least you'll see where to look.

Wow. That is almost hard to believe!

My 1989 Volkswagen Golf which has been sitting outside for over a year now with a toasted clutch doesn't have a hint of rust anywhere except for the studs on the snow tires.

Here are some pics. Only a couple would focus well enough to see with the camera, but there are a few more spots. I shot the channel first, then the rust along the liner. Hey, the car is not in danger of falling apart (as far as I know) but I'm just wondering what's going on that I can't see!

Odd.

I checked all along the same areas with a strong flashlight and found nothing on mine.

Could be rail dust. Rail dust can settle into the paint if the car was transported by train.

Note in the second picture there is rust on the rubber liner itself. I had a 1997 F150 that was covered in rail dust all over the bed, bad stuff. They should repaint it. I had mine compounded out of the bed, roof and hood which basically removed all the clearcoat....5 years later the truck looked like crap. Get it fixed!

One very important detail - Does this rust seem to be coming up from the metal of the car, or is it a surface thing that wipes off the top of the paint?

It's from the metal. Unfortunately because of the limitations of the camera and the location, I can't get a good picture.

In that case, I can only parrot Bjs470's 'not good' remark.

Got Car back - It's Good To Go!

Got my car back. Trunk channel area was repainted and looks great. They surmise that somewhere along the line, something metalic managed to find its way into the channel and started the corrosion process. I'll keep an eye on it, but it looks good now!
