Burning Smell

do any of you guys get a burning smell when you push it past (the legal speed limit) MPH?, everything i push it i get this burning smell inside the car, i took it back to the dealer and he said it was the water from air conditioner hitting the engine so the smell is from that, sounds fishy, just wondering if anyone else has this problem

I haven't had any burning smell in my car, but I've not approached xxx MPH either.

But my first thought was, why are you driving xxx MPH? And where near the Bronx are you doing this?

I've hit about xxx on an expressway. Actually it was the Southern State.

Southern State? Seriously? With the hills and limited sight distances, that's really gutsy. It's in the top five most dangerous roads in the state.

i think what you guys are referring to is what i like to call "the new car exhaust smell". its mostly just burning up the new exhaust pipes etc. 2 of my friends who have purchased cars lately have this same "smell", as well as do i. if its still around after a couple hundred miles, then i would worry, but this is normal.

Folks. Please refrain from discussing driving over the posted speed limit.

It's illegal and against forum rules. I will edit posts.

Compared to some of the other mods, I'm harmless. I love to see where discussions lead to. I don't ban, yell, scream, threaten, etc, but I am "forced" to step in and make changes when it violates the forum owner's rules. I'm 99% certain that every one of us here has exceeded the posted legal speed at some point or another, but the forum owners have deemed it inappropriate conversation when talking about public roads/highways, etc.

If you do it on a licensed track and post your top speeds, times, etc. That's fine.

I had this 'burning smell' (I called it 'stinky' smell) when doing very strong accellerations with my 2000 SE and with my 2004 SL. This stinking tendency seems to lessen as the thousands of miles accumulate. I haven't had this smell yet with my '09, but then I haven't yet done very strong accellerations with this baby.

I never had the slightest problem with either the 2000 or 2004, and never had any concern that this smell indicated trouble.

Yep I had the same with my new Maxima last summer, park in the garage and I thought Nissan had installed a mini-nuclear reactor under the hood....

Your fine no worries...

It does go away although very slowly....

Yep. Same here. Things run REALLY hot under the hoods of Maximas, especially in hot climates.

This smell happened with my 2000 SE, my 2004 SL and with my 2009 SV. With me, it happened under very aggressive acelleration as I was passing in a short passing zone. No high speed was involved; I was usually popping very quickly from around 30 MPH to 60 MPH, and would notice a pungent, very unpleasant odor, and realized it was coming from my car. Never had a bit of trouble with my 2000 or 2004, and so far no trouble with my 2009, so I agree with MaxLoverAz that this should not be of any concern.

yup, the smell is normal...every car and truck i have owned smell after acceleration abuse.
also on a side note if the smell is very nasty, it may be worth checking the exhaust, just because on my lightning i picked up a plastic bag on the freeway that stuck to the tips and now it smells horrible every time i drive it...

thanks guys.
Its not stinky... just hot exahust burn off and engine smell
I admit as light has said it is when I am agressivly poping around being a ""somtimes stompfoot" still laughing about that light.
I figured theres a lot of seals and oils /manufacturing solvents etc that have to be consumed and it may take several temp raising events to fully accomplish this.
Good to hear youve all experianced it as well.

One cool thing is sound car somtimes makes when I shut down.Like a space ship powering down.Been a while since I drove my space ship though, memories.

i know what you mean about the sound...usually my other cars would do some similair sound too, but it was due to the cold air intakes...i figured my maximus started doing it when i installed the k&n air filter...either way i love that sound, reminds me of the turbo on my diesel

Mine has a pretty obvious smell. Even though it is brand new, I have never noticed this smell on a new car before. I figured it's just various fluids/coatings from the factory wearing off.

You hit the nail right on the head man! that is exactly what causes the smell; this is my fourth or fifth car with the smell when I first got it; it didn't go away until I passed 3k miles a few months back!

enjoy your ride man!!!

Lol. Easy tiger he was just making an observation. I noticed a smell when I first got my max that smelled a lot like just burning oils and solvents. Now under the presumption that I had mine before yours does that mean you plagiarized my un-noted thought? Or possibly I plagiarized you before you took credit as the "original" writer of said thought before you even thought it yourself. Curious, very curious. *Cue Twilight Zone Music*

The thread starter here was not talking about a general smell; he was referring to the very brief rotten eggs smell resulting from an unusually hard burst of acelleration that has been present early-on in the last three Maxima generations. I may be mistaken, but I get the feeling your smell may be ongoing (continual). If so, then one of the things adding the most pungency to this aroma is the new type glue used to hold the windshield in.

In the old days, windshields were held in by being enclosed in a frame, but the windshield on this new Maxima is not enclosed on either the sides or top, It is simply glued down with the vilest smelling concoction imaginable. I had to have my windshield replaced, and ended up leaving the windows down for a week because of the smell of the glue.

No plagiarism here. If you do a quick search of the forums, this was actually discussed last SEPTEMBER (2009) which would have actually been before you even joined. Mriem769 suggestion of "calming down" was basically telling you that a moderator was about to step in if it continued down this path.

As anyone around here will (probably) confirm, I'm a quiet and mostly harmless mod around here. I will edit any post with speeding comments (as per the rules) and personal attacks against other members or moderators are a pet peeve.

smelly wheel wells(sound damper pads)

Easy Tiger Curious, very curious. *Cue Twilight Zone Music*

I had seen a thread from september 2009 that talks about all this and how certain comments by other mebers will be cescored.Members should refrein from personal attacks and stick to the topics of and pertaining to "rules of the forums".

BTW the car smells when it rains and I have determined that this is all the mucky water that water logs those noise damper pads that are in the wheel wells.
They are soft and absorb water and when its nasty street water you can smell it in the garrage. I no longer have a any wet dogs but ,MEMORIES not too sure about the longevity of those pads if they hold stink.?
Maybe this is a nother thread though.

Interesting on the wet pads. However, maybe blast them with fabreeze? My wife loves the stuff, swears it works.

I am not sure how the internal cabin air filter is configured yet. It's here on the forum someplace how to replace it. But on a previous car, the humidity here caused that filter to get "mildewy" smelling and you'd notice it for the first 5 mins of starting the car/running the heater or A/C. Not sure how much of a problem that would be on the Max.

Glad to hear that others have had the same "hot" smell. About to take the Maxima out of winter storage and I remember last fall that if I ran it up a little harder through the "gears", I got the "burnoff" smell that I was not used to with other cars or trucks. Still only have 2000 kilometres on it.
