Ok, an update on the Poll:
7 said they think Nissan should get rid of it and 13 said we luv it and Nissan should keep it.
It looks like there are over twice as many who prefer the Sound Generator to those that don't

I voted to remove it...not because it is annoying but I don't believe it is needed. Why make anything more "noisy" than it has to be? (but yeah, I was one of those guys back in the 70s who installed "glass packs" though)
Personally, all I want is the performance (read ride, dependability, comfort and power(when I want it.)) I don't need the fumes (i.e. like at the track) or noise, or trick lights under the car....just performance. I realize that not everyone agrees (just ask some bikers who use straight pipes) but that is why there are mod kits and procedures (whither for power or show!)
Obviously though, it wasn't a big factor in my buying decision or I wouldn't have bought my Max and why I haven't taken any steps to remove it but had it been an "option," I wouldn't have opted for it.

I think you Hold Down the Disc/AUX button while simultaneously depressing the FF and RR buttons and hitting the Volume Button on the steering wheel with the Brake Depressed and Fog Lights on.

When you push down fairly hard on the accelerator, and the RPMs jump quickly from the teens to 4 or 5K, part of the sound you hear inside the cabin is put in the cabin via the sound generator.
Nissan found the cabin was too well insulated, and without the sound generator, pushing the gas pedal hard produced brisk acceleration, but little sound. They felt a sporty sedan meant the driver should receive some audio input from this strong engine whenever he flexed its muscle. So they added the sound generator. This sound is picked up near the engine manifold, and is probably introduced into the cabin through the firewall, somewhere under the dash.

There is a 30 minute YouTube presentation of the Maxima to the automotive press in June 08 where the Nissan rep discussed this. The discussion went that the engineers did such a good job in isolating external noise that they ended up quieting the interior so much that you could not hear the engine.

Its kind of long, but somewhat interesting.
So what I had understood is that the engineers put in more of a "tuned port" of sorts so that the engine sound could be heard inside the cabin. I don't believe it is an active sound generator per se, but rather a passive device, to couple into the cabin what is already there.
I liken a tuned port to be similar to a device that would couple certain sounds (as engine) into the cabin, similar to a port in a bass-reflex speaker.
