Re-circulation mode WITHOUT A/C on...possible?
That is EXACTLY right! You can 'push' the buttons the way that you want them, but once the fan is turned on - ALL bets are off, and it goes to FRESH AIR!!!
DMCfirestar500 - You know that, and I know that. You and I (and most other posters here) know that, if the fan is off, then the HVAC system is not even operating, in which case the 'recir' light is meaningless for discussing the Air Conditioner status.
But half the posters on any given thread read only the first few posts in a thread, then often skip over to the last few. Those posts in between, where a verifiable conclusion has been reached, and the question answered, are often overlooked. This is a common problem here.
And thus the thread continues on until the question is researched yet again, and the answer determined yet again. And so it goes.
I agree. The Majority of the time, I don't need the A/C on with the heat in recirculation mode.
haha wow such bitter haters.
Yes, I can admit when I'm wrong. If the fan is on, then you are correct, there is no way of operating the recirculation.
The title and the initial few posts only state "recir mode without A/C on possible." Yes, that is possible. Did I carefully read the intermittent posts? Nope. Cry me a river, and go write Nissan a letter

I did some research and along with my Z, I've found other forums where the G35 has this issue also. I'm sure the G37 does and other Infinity models. Has anyone called their local service department to see if there is a undocumented procedure to resolve this?
When I had my S2000 it would turn on the A/C when you turned on the defroster which made sense to me however others wanted it off, Honda actually had a way to turn it off that was undocumented but the dealers provided the procedure for us.

Here's my "thread contribution."
I have no problems with only being allowed to recirculated the cabin air with the A/C on. It's probably the healthier alternative anyway. However, I do agree that it's a bit odd for the design to prevent us from any combination we want for our car.
I remember a buddy of mine had to press the recirculation, fan, and A/C buttons in a specific order to get the fan on with recirc but without the A/C in his Integra. I doubt that will work for us, but I do agree that there may be some sort of work around that we may not be aware of.
The past four days was the first time I became annoyed at not being able to have the car in 'recirculate' without the AC being on.
The situation: With the HVAC system on low, set at what gave a comfortable overall temp inside the car, and in 'Ventilation', no matter what 'Mode' (head/foot/both/etc) we chose, the outside air (41 degrees) continually blew right on our feet. Although the rest of us was very comfortable, our feet were like ice blocks. To stop that air flow, we put the system in 'Recirculate'. That stops the icy air from hitting our feet, but automatically runs the AC non-stop. So we end up putting 1000 miles on the AC compresser in four days when it was never actually needed.
As CKphilly (and a few others) suggested, the AC staying on is not all bad, and sometimes keeps the windows from fogging up. But I would have liked to have a choice in this.

This is really a poor design....
This is such an issue with me that with my next purchase either Nissan or not I'll check for this issue and it it exists and can't be resolved I'll walk away from the car.
I know this is gonna seem stupid... But I just recently picked up my MY10 Max and the A/C always seems to go on... regardless of cabin temp set.
I turned on Climate control this am and it went to AC immediately.... set to defrost, kicked up temp, stayed on AC. had to manually shut if off, turned car off, back on.... defaulted right back to AC.
Am I missing something obvious here? Doesnt strike me that this should be complicated...
