The Car Of your dreams. Datson 810 aka the Bluebird

I guess you could call this the 0.5 Gen Maxima!
It is credited being the roots of the maxima but it was the next 81-84 models that were named the first gen.
These are the two gens left off cars on the Maxima.org header, the 0.5 and 1

Wow, Flip2cho! That is almost like looking at prenatal images of a soon-to-be-born baby!

I realize that style would ring no bells with today's crowd, but after driving Detroit products for thirty years, the appearance of the Datsun 810 won my heart at first glance.

A lot of the front end treatment as shown in that photo is very similar to the front end of the 1st gen Maxima. Even the rectangular hood ornament resembles the one on the '81 and '82 Maximas. The '83 and '84 had a square hood ornament. No hood ornaments for the Maxima after the '84. Of course there was never a two door Maxima.

I would love to have that car just as it appears in your photo. I STILL love that styling.

Thanks for sharing!

MaxLoverAz -

An '84 Maxima AD! I haven't seen one of those since . . . since . . . since 1984! That was a defining year, in that I had drooled over the Datsun Maxima (and its 810 predecessor) for years, and had enough money saved to buy one, but decided to see what the '85s looked like. The '84 (with name changed from Datsun to Nissan) was great, but the '85 was greater - more power, roomier, FWD, and more stylish.

There are probably a few here on the 7th gen board that may not remember the Maxima was available in a handsome station wagon format through the first eight model years (gens 1 and 2). Even the Maxima predecessor, the Datsun 810, was available in a station wagon.

Flip2cho -

That is it! That is the 4 door Datsun 810 just like my cohort at work drove. To this day, she probably thinks I 'had a thing' for her, but it was only her car I was in love with.

Datsun had their Z, which really established them as a 'player' in the U.S., their 210 model as their low-price econo sedan, the 510 as the mid-price roomy family sedan, and the 810 as their top-of-the-line luxury sedan. All three had excellent reputations as being affordable to buy, economical to run, and very reliable, especially when compared with Detroit products.

vinbags44 -

About time you took control of you life and moved to the Maxima. Congratulations on your new baby! Keep us informed as to how much fun you are having with this beauty.

1985 Maxima Ad, just a side note I wonder if we could compile all of the Nissan/Datsun tag lines? Major Motion, Driven, Shift, Life Is a Journey, Enjoy the Ride, We Are Driven, The Name is Nissan, Everything you need and nothing you don't, Datsun Saves... Anymore?

I don't recall things very well, but do remember hearing the slogans you mentioned. I can't think of others offhand.

BUT:

Wow! That WAS MY CAR! Both our '85 Maximas were silver (like that one), and both had driving lights under the front bumper exactly like those in the photo. I was not totally wild about the 'turbine' wheels used on the '86 and '86 (HARD to get really clean), but everything else on this car screamed 'I'm yours!' My wife always kidded about our 'voice warnings', and named her car's voice system 'Frieda', while I named mine 'Hildegarde.'

Oh, the memories . . .

it looks really nice! IMO charcoal leather is the only way to go. It's one thing I had to have while shooing for a new car. Black on Black

Mystic Jade is the color I see least often on the streets. I usually have to catch that color on my dealer's lot.

Always remember where you park your Mystic Jade, because it can appear to be any of around six other colors (from violet to gray) depending on lighting and angle. This subversive chameleon of a color has left cold chills up my spine several times by shifting hues between glances that were seconds apart. I hope your VIN doesn't end in 666, the sign of the occult.

Having said all that, I do like Mystic Jade; different from every other color on the road.

I agree because to my eyes that pictures color looks more like my ocean grey than green. Maybe just in my eyes. That color does change. Nice car congrats!

It definitely seems to change, and you'd swear it was gray until it's next to a gray one and you see it's no where close. It really looks freaky under the canopy lights at a filling station at night.

I think I want mine in winter frost with premium charcoal leather...

Thumbs up 62 yo

62 years young here.

Only had mine a month now but consider it the best in a long list of cars I've owned.

Some of the postings here listed previously owned cars. That got me to thinking about those I've had to play with. I probably missed some, but here is a list in order of ownership as near as I can recall:

01. 59 DeSoto 1965-67
02. 60 Oldsmobile Jan 1967 - Mar 68

You just got your first car ever a little less than a year ago and your already moving up into a brand new ride? Must be nice... I'm sure you will love the Max. Post up some pictures of the new ride when you get it.

Thanks Flip,

Very interesting question! At first I was tempted to say one of the Corvettes, but it seemed something was always breaking on them. The Turbo Supra would probably be first choice, followed closely by the Monte Carlo. The Monte was all white with all options (like the Max), had a 454 ci engine, and swiveling bucket seats to make it easier to get in and out.

The Maxima is easily the best of all those cars since it looks great, has plenty of power, corners well, has lots of luxury, and is a bargain price compared to its current competitors.

I never modified any of these cars. Instead, I would spend gargantuan efforts to keep them spotless inside and out - always washing by hand.

It may be interesting to consider that even though I drove these cars very hard, none have ever had an engine problem (aside from a few problematic carburetors) and I've always used the cheapest oil available at the drive-thru oil changing places.

Each decade the average car has had vastly improved reliability.

Yes, you drove them hard. But you didn't abuse them. And you are spot on that dino oil works very well in a car, as long as the oil and filter are changed at appropriate intervals.

I have used only dino oil for over 200,000 miles on several cars (one of them was a Maxima), and never had engine problems. In fact, for several years after I let go of my '85 Maxima with 206,000 on the odo, I continued to see it tooling around town with the driver smiling like he had a new car.

I will admit that synthetic is a superior lubricant. But with the fairly gentle way I drive, I would be wasting that superiority, especially since I will always change my oil around each 3750 miles anyway.

As one who has been driving regularly since 1949, I can vouch for your statement that reliability has gradually gotten better every decade. My '10 Maxima with Premium and Tech packages is still completely trouble-free after 16 1/2 months.

Hi Light,

Always look forward to seeing your posts.

If I recall correctly we both have nearly identical cars: white with premium package... and we're both in the Atlanta area.

Yep. White with Premium and Tech packages. Everything I could possible want is there.

I live between two meadows south of Atlanta in a rural area of Fayette county. I am so thankful I never have to get into Atlanta traffic. I know traffic is bad out your way (Marietta).

I'm 41 and I just picked up a SV with the Premium & Tech package. The car is Navy Blue with the Cafe Latte interior. So far I'm loving it. This is my 3rd Maxima. I had a 93 and 99.

Just purchased a 2010 Maxima SV w/ Sport, Tech, and Monitor Pkgs. I've had it for about 2 weeks and still have the original tank of gas that came with it. I bought it as soon as it came off the truck. I test drove a Super Black on Black and was going to purchase it but liked the way Ocean Gray changed colors in and out of the sun...plus no one around here has it. Loving it so far.....

Very wise choice. Black is nice, but there are a hundred million black cars on the road, but very few Ocean Grays. Nissan's Ocean gray is a subtle, tasteful color that you will get nice comments on.

Congrats on your new ride!

Great color choice if I might say so myself! (has nothing to do with the fact that I have the same color.haha) I was torn between OG and charcoal and am glad I made the choice I did. Everytime I look at my car at a distance or when I'm up close washing it I think to my self how much I love the OG. Congrats on the new ride I'm sure you will love it! Feels good getting one right off the truck doesn't it? Knowing no one else has test drivin it before and never STOMPED on it to "see what she's got". You know it's always been in hood hands.

Just picked up my black on black 2010 Maxima yesterday. It drives better than any other luxury car I test drove. I'm 18, and yes, I payed a large amount of the car off on my own, with help of parents of course, so don't hate please lol.
