Need New Speedometer

After 72,700 miles I retired the Square'ish RSAs and replaced them with Michelin Primacy MXV4s. (I got down to 4/32nds on the fronts and 5/32nds on the rear and with us Floridians "fixinta" start our rainy season, decided to bite the bullet now and get new shoes for my 09 Max.)

While out on the Turnpike testing my new shoes, a Florida State Trooper pulled me over and asked "do you know how fast you were going?" Being the honest sort I am, I replied, "No Sir, I just replaced my RSAs and can no longer feel the vibration at 60 and 70 Mph so I really don't know." He started laughing and iterated how he too had some RSAs at one time an knew exactly to what I was referring. With a cautionary note to use the "real speedometer" he congratulated me on my good sense for replacing the RSAs with the Primacy and sent me on my way.

So heed my tale of good fortune and when you do replace those darn'd (but very long lived RSAs to give credit where credit is due, ) keep an eye on your "real speedometer" lest you find yourself face to face with a trooper who is not quite so understanding!

Great story! I can't ever remember a Michelin tire I didn't have a good experience with.

Thanks for the laugh LtLeary! I know exactly what you are talking about. I will probably end up with Michelins when I replace these RSAs which I hope is sooner rather then later. I have always gone with the more exotic tires on my past cars but I think I will just go with some higher end all season Pilots or something along those lines being that price isn't usually an issue when it comes to tires for me.

That is such a funny story. I thought we were adding a new issue to the short list. Michelins are good tires and I had a pair last 80000K on them but they were never used in the rain for obvious reasons of tread wear. Do you have any vibration issues?

Great story!

Fortunately, I have had very good service with my RSAs so far, because, unfortunately, at my age, my RSAs will probably outlive me.

Maybe if I'm lucky and make it to Heaven, Bibendum (the baloonish mascot of Michelin since the 1920s?) will be there, and God will allow him to put Michelins on my golden chariot.

Vibration? What is that? No, or at least compared to the RSAs they replaced, smooth as glass!

Got em on sale at Sears for $201 a piece...total out the door with Life Time Rotate and Balance and Road Hazard, 1050. Not bad at all. Of course, that Lifetime is about 1.5 years for me!

Come on light, I hate you talking like that

at risk of sounding like a dumby, what are RSAs. I gather they are tires obviously.

Are you telling me that my OEM RSA's will last until 70k miles?

I have an 09 with 13k miles in 17 months of ownership. At this rate, the tires will last 7.6 years.

Will these tire dry-rot?

Well, I was not aware anyone here had personal feelings for me. If it makes you feel better, I am married to a wonderful woman who is 14 years younger than I am, is in very good health, plans on living to at least age 90, and has warned me that she will not permit me to leave before she does. So I may still be tooling around in a gen X Maxima at age 100+ many years from now.

RSAs are actually the Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires that come on 7th generation Maximas. Many here have disliked them for years (RS-A tires also came on 6th generation Maxima SEs). I personally have had no trouble with the RSAs on my '09, but I have always been lucky with my Maximas. Hopefully, I will be equally lucky with my health and longevity.

Well, mine did and could have probably gone a bit further if I wasn't worried about hydroplaning. I rotated every 25K (I drive highways primarily so the old 5/10K rule I threw out)otherwise I would be rotating ever 6 weeks!

Who knows about the Dry Rot?! I'm guessing not, as I looked for every excuse to replace mine and could only come up with the "Rainy Season is coming and I only have 4/32nds left" rationale, so they will probably be the "Wonder Bread" of the tire world and stay coherent for a hundred years or more!
