Reseting the ECU

I'm sure a lot of you know how to reset the ECU. I really don't have a clue lmao. Reason why I'm asking is because I putted an intake in my and a friend of mine told me that I have to reset the ECU to learn the new air flow. Is this really true ?

I'm fairly new here, but I'll take a stab at the answer. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong...

You can manually reset the ECU by removing the negative battery terminal. Leave it off for a minute or two, then hook 'er back up. There is also a slightly more complex way to do the same thing that DOESN'T require disconnecting the cable, and that could be found in another thread.

After resetting, the ECU will take somewhere around 100 miles of driving in varied conditions to re-calibrate itself to any changes. Nothing that you need to do besides just your normal driving around.

Is it necessary to reset it? No, it will automatically re-calibrate itself eventually. Probably take more than the 100 miles or so, though, that's why some choose to just immediately reset after installing a new mod and let the ECU re-learn and re-calibrate more quickly.

Experts, how'd I do? I may be totally wrong, lol.

Serpent is basically right. You can unplug the neg terminal on the battery (mine took like 15 minutes) and then re-connect it. You'll need to reprogram all your saved stuff again. Just driving will update the new ECU map over time but as I understand it, it will average the new map in with the old so won't be 100% accurate until you drive around enough (100 miles sounds plenty) that it averages out the old info. Resetting the ECU clears the map so it starts fresh...supposedly.

Can't say for sure because I've never done it, but I'm 95% sure it would stay there. It's a hard drive based system, so it's actualy written in. Cycling power to the unit shouldn't make you lose any of that data.

For some reason I have never had to reset the radio/stations after having the battery disconnected during y-pipe install/reinstall and cvt valve body replacement at the dealer. Def more than 10-15 minutes unconnected.
I do seem to lose the seat and window settings though.
