Trunk will not open

I searched the forums, but didn't find a good answer to this question.

I have a 2009 Max. I tried opening my trunk this morning, but it will not open.

I verified that the valet switch is set to "ON". The trunk release to the left of the steering wheel does nothing. When I press the button on the trunk lid, I hear 4 beeps, but does not open.

I reached in from the back seats to verify something was not jammed in the trunk. I only have one bag in there and it was not caught in the lock.

I tried pulling the manual lever just behind the back seats. The light came on, but the trunk would not open. I could not reach the manual lever to the rear of the trunk.

Anyone have any ideas on what might be happening?
Thanks in advance
jimr

I've admittedly never used the valet switch, but wouldn't it make more sense for that to be OFF instead of ON?

I see your thinking and have tried it both ways. I never changed it from what it was "ON", but I had the same thought that perhaps it got changed by accident, so tried it.

Same result.

The only thing else I would try would be to push down on the trunk lid while you push the button to see if it will release. If that fails try pulling the manual release while the trunk lid is pushed down. If the latch is binding it may not release until it is no longer binding.

Good luck.

if the car shows that the trunk is open then just pull up with a lot of force... Maybe your rubber lining or whatever is just stuck to the body....
That is pretty common but never had that happen yet....

I wish it was as easy as the trunk switch in the glove compartment. But I checked that already. Tried it with the switch in both on and off position with same results.

When I try to open with the key fob, nothing happens. When I try to use the switch on the dash, nothing happens. When I press the trunk open button on the trunk lid, the car door alert beeps 4 times.

Never does it report that the trunk is open on the dash.

I'll try pushing down on the trunk while trying to open to see if it helps

thanks all for the suggestions.

Lol you guys, he said he tried that button already.

I'm curious though, when you click the button on the trunk, or the button on near the steering wheel for the trunk release, do you hear the lock sound go "clunk" (in a good way) or is it completely silent?
If it's completely silent, try checking fuses, but if it "clunks", then as some have already mentioned, try pulling up on the trunk really hard.
Or, have someone pull the manual release lever while you are pulling up on the trunk.
Best of luck.

With one keyfob a distance away take your back-up keyfob and from the pass through opening put it inside the trunk (within reach) and see if the trunk will open. This is part of the lockout protection.
If this doesn't work it's likely a fuse as mentioned above or other electrical issue.

I will try that. Can someone tell me which fuse relates to the trunk release?

Not sure but there should be a fuse ID diagram on the inside box cover under the left dash drivers side.

Looked at that, but nothing says anything about trunk release.

And tried the procedure with the key fob in the trunk, and it did not work.

Did you try the fuse block in the engine bay? Might be a long shot, but why not?

Yep^ That was going to be next suggestion.
Also check to see if you have the ignition switch in the off position.
The truck release will not operate with the ignition in the on position!

My trunk release will open when the ignition is off, Acc, On, and engine running.

Thanks for all of the suggestion. Unfortunately, none of them are the problem. Going to call the dealer, but before I do, I wanted to check the fuse.

Does anyone know which fuse and location powers the trunk lid release mechanism?

thanks again

Sorry, I was refering to trunk release button on the key fob only.

Releasing the trunk lid
Press the button for longer than 0.5 seconds
to open the trunk lid. The trunk release
button will not operate when the ignition switch is
in the ON position or when the trunk cancel
switch is in the OFF position. See “Cancel
switch” in this section.

Worst case scenario is its something wrong with the bcm. Looking at the service manual, it could be a number of things which for the most part lead to removal and replacement of the part.

Maybe try disconnecting the battery for a while (10-30min) and see if that'll reset the computer.

Didn't see the fuse for the trunk solenoid but I'll check again.

I'm having some issues with that trunk button too, but that's likely an entirely different issue from this and more regarding the antenna/key fob receiver.

Unbelievable that I checked both fuse boxes and nothing is labeled for trunk or trunk lid release.

Can't find it anywhere on the Internet either. I guess the next step is to start pulling fuses one by one.

That helps a great deal....thank you. Looks like it is te 40A fusible link (H) in the fuse panel located in the engine compartment. I'll try to replace that, although if that were the cause, I'd probably have bigger problems.

Might just be a bad trunk lock actuator. I'll try a few things and post back what I find.

Thanks everyone for all of your help

Russell915 - I just noticed that the trunk lid and the fuel filler lid opener are listed together on the 40 amp fusable link. My fuel filler lid opener does not lock any more however my trunk lid has all of its functions. Just wondering if you fuel filler door is also disabled?

Everything homed off of that fuse is working fine with the exception of the trunk lid. That leads me to believe that its something with the cable, solenoid/actuator, or motor.

I'm taking it to the dealer next week.

sounds like a solenoid in the trunk.....use a coat hanger to reach the manual trunk release in the trunk if you don't have 60/40 seats.

Thanks all who replied. I brought the car to the dealer who found a broken power wire going to the trunk release. Very easy (and inexpensive) fix.

Trunk wil not open

Ok, I'm having the same exact problem with my cars truck. Did you get to see which wire was broken. I'm thinking that there may be a wire, through design, that may be in the open which leads to get broken by cargo in the truck.

I posted about it a few weeks ago, there is a picture in that thread with the wire I found broken. However, after repairing it my trunk is still not operational. I've given up on it for a while.

I've noticed a number of threads on the topic, but im only replying to the most recent.

I had the same issue, upon inspection I had "multiple" shorts in the wiring harness. I replaced the rear latch harness #240159n00A and both stoppers # 84840-JB10A. Working like it did in 09' again...

⭐Solved Trunk Won't Open

If your trunk won't open from the key fob, button on trunk, or button on the dash, and the switch in the glovebox is switched on ... ⭐There is a wiring harness on the left side, get some wire cutters split it open and check to make.sure any of the wires aren't pinched or broken... I discovered the purple signal wire was chopped in half on a 2012 Maxima due to one of the trunk shocks missing causing her to slam the trunk harder... hope this helps #JustFixinDeezKhars Mobile Mechanic Service 💯

Fixed

Apparently your answer fixed my problem, it was switch in the glove box. I turned it off without looking at it ,thinking it is there for the light. Thanks
