Custom windshield mount GPS/dash cam?

I bought a Garmin Dash Cam 20, but I'm having trouble finding a good mounting spot. It won't mount up behind or under the mirror because of the sunshield material, and everywhere else on the windshield is intrusive to the view.

The problem as I see it is the Garmin universal mount, which limits the placement of whatever Garmin device is used. In this case it forces the camera body too near to my face as I'm driving, or too far into my field of view.

Does anyone have any experience with customizing a mount for such a device? Any pictures, or suggestions? My possible solution is to put a high strength tape over the nubby sunscreen and attach the mount to that, but that seems kind of half necked.

Regarding actual use of the Dash Cam 20: at $250 it is expensive for a dash cam, but I bought it because I trust the Garmin name. I hooked it up, and it works fine. It records 1080p and stores 4 minute slices. The lens is extreme wide angle, I'd guess it captures about 150*. If there is an "event" it immediately saves and locks the video; I didn't test that feature. Fire the ignition and it turns on, shut the car off and it powers down. Other than where it is mounted, it is pretty much set and forget, which is what I think you want in a dash can, other than reliability of course.
