Error Code P0340 and rattling

2009 Maxima SV w/ 112k miles

1. When accelerating at lower speeds there is a rattling sound under the hood
2. Using my OBDII I picked up a code of P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 1
3. I tried putting in new spark plugs since the originals were still in and it was time anyway. The back center and right plugs had oil on them, so I need to look at the O-rings and valve cover gaskets.

My question: Do you think the oil leaking into the plug wells could be causing the rattling / P0340 camshaft error or am I looking at 2 different issues?

(Edited) I should also add that I replaced the Cam Position Sensor before changing the spark plugs and it made no difference.

Did you use an OEM Sensor or a more "generic one" from an autoparts house. I have heard of issues with non genuine Nissan Camshaft Sensors. If you replaced them and still have a 340 code then you may have some other issue (I am sorry but when you said it made no difference I didn't know if you meant the rattle or the P0340 code.)
You didn't mention the spark plug tips (how they looked.) If they were oil fouled then yep, ya got some bigger issues.

Re the rattle, some have found that the heat shield on the cat converter was causing that noise. Or is it pinging?

It wasn't an OEM sensor, but it also wasn't a cheapy. I got it from Carquest and it cost about $65. After replacing I still get the code and still hear the rattling.

The plugs did have oil on them so I'm planning on replacing the valve cover gasket.

I've seen the posts about the heat shield and that isn't the problem. I also tried switching to 93 octane gas for a few tanks and that made no difference. I have been alternating between 87 and 90 for years with the occasional 93.

defiantly the tube o rings to solve the oil problem, what rpm does the rattle happen? Have a friend on the gas peddle while in PARK and start to look and hear where it's coming from. And as it was stated earlier Nissan's are funny and like Nissan parts, I have not looked it up but are you sure bank 1 is in the back you do have 2 in that car 1 in the front and 1 in the back.

The rattle is generally happening at 1500-2000 rpm. The sound seems to coming from the area near the firewall, slightly towards the passenger side of the car. It only happens when the car is in park or at lower speeds. There is no rattle at those RPMs when driving about 40 mph or higher.

A new development is that occasionally when going from a standstill the car accelerates very, very slowly and the rattle doesn't occur. Gas mileage is also down about 15-20% with no change in driving habits.

Also, I had replaced both sensors just to be sure.

Did you ever find the root of the problem. I'm also having this problem and I'm freaking out. Thanks
