Loud knocking on cold start
Loud knocking on cold start
2012 Maxima SV with 128k mi. Originally purchased in late 2016 with 57k miles. No major issues outside of changing the alternator approximately 4 years ago.
Currently using synthetic oil with the latest oil change and I did go over about 2500 miles around 7500 mi it was on synthetic oil.
Had a check engine light on for a few months but mechanic couldn't fix it since it was giving us an evap code. I was able to pass emissions but the check engine light kept coming on. Went to the dealer to get the check engine light looked they changed the control valve under p0456. Check engine light came on in few days.
start. Cost me $580 down the drain.
1 month ago I changed the serpentine belt and this noise started to happen on cold start in the morning only when the temperature is below 45°.
Today I went to two different mechanics. One said I would have to leave the car there for them to diagnose it after I showed him this video clip of the noise.
The other mechanic said that it's a timing chain issue and I would have to spend approximately $3,000 to get it fixed. This was due to not following proper oil maintenance schedule and that's a common issue on 3.5 vq engines. He said he would also have to clean the engine since there's some gunk in there but not sure if true.
Would like to hear some feedback if it's worth spending the $3,000 or more.
Sould I just get it traded in and get a new car.
If I change the oil to heavier viscosity would the noise stop. I have read that maybe Lucas oil additive could stops the noise.

Timing chain tensioner. While you are in there might as well replace chains, guides, and vvt parts, If that is the only 2 issues its cheaper than a car payment. But after 12 years stuff does start to break. I retired my 2012 as the repairs doubled the value of the car.
