There will be necessary adjustments between the concept sedan and the 8th gen Maxima, but the overall styling motif will stay the same. Most casual observers will not notice the differences we Maxima fanatics will quickly spot.

Some obvious changes:

The 22" or so wheels on the concept will drop to a much more practical 19" or so. This will make for a much more agile, spirited driving capability, but will probably leave room inside the fenders for lowering for those low runners who post here.

The futuristic styling of the rear will be more practical, with the trunk opening changed.

The outside rear view mirrors will be less rakish (less wide) and have a larger vertical mirror for safety reasons.

The rear doors will not extend quite as far to the rear (the concept doors reach way too far back).

The adjustment in rear extension of the rear doors means the rearmost triangle at the end of the windows in the rear doors will be cut off by a tiny pillar, which will be blacked out and not very visible. This is necessary if the rear door windows are to be able to be rolled down inside the rear door.

We can also tell the 8th gen will have modern electronic safety features by noting the cutouts (holes) in the camo so the sensors can see out. We can also see little cameras/sensors in places like under the outside rear view mirrors. So automatic braking, lane drifting alert, outside cameras are all there.

I have followed this thread and after 12 years of ownership of my 2002 Merlot maxima SE 6 speed I have to say that the new maxima will have to be pretty darn good for me to trade up. I admit if NISMO gets its hands on it I would definitely get one.... Jaja wishful thinking on that one.

You know what the 3rd gen and 5th gen both had spirited feeling that Maxima's give you when you drive them now it's just dead. I don't know where the passion went into putting these cars together but it's pretty sad. If it was up to me i'd still be in the 93 even though we bought it when I was 7 years old.

This article claims that the 8th gen could possibly be a 2.5L 4cylinder would somebody feel free to explain before one of us has a massive stroke or a riot breaks out? Seriously though read this article guys.

 

Chris - That article lost all credibility with me when it said the 8th gen Maxima would be unveiled 'late next year.' And that article was written this week. The unveiling will probably be at the Detroit Auto Show in January, and certainly no later than the New York Auto Show in April.

As for the possibility of a turbocharged 2.5 litre engine, that could be interesting. Because of the turbocharging, acceleration would probably be on a par with the current power plant, or slightly higher. And the MPG would be in the 30s.

Even more interesting, if Nissan paired a turbocharged 2.5 engine with an electric motor, acceleration would be even better, and MPG would be even higher.

 

I have mixed feeling on the new generation... I'm honestly all for buying older cars/ generations! Some new cars that come out are great, but I seem to find myself always returning to the older models of everything! I'll be waiting for the unveiling but I have no real expectations.

 

Jprocs24 The older models are alot better than these new ones that's for sure. The days of superior cars are over if you look at it today Lexus Mazda and Mercedes are pretty much the only brands with low complaints good reliablity Acura/Honda is Alright all the other brands are in the pitts. Some people like me who own a 6th gen complain but then feel good when your friend has a Charger that's had way more problems than yours.

 

Chris That's for sure. The only cars I plan on buying are either German or Japanese, I've had both and the German one didn't turn out so good haha (I still have faith in them!). I can't see myself buying a new car just due to the cost & depreciation! I will always buy older Japanese cars & I hope to buy a Supra one day.

I've driven pretty well all the new Audi's, BMW's, Mercedes/ etc.. I have to say that most are built like crap and that the 8th gen Max could be fair competition. I would take my 5th gen over certain BMW's/ Audi's any day, it's built better than new cars!

Stay on the German track they last a lifetime you're doing good. My parents have a 2012 535i and things in the shop every month for something. this year they've taken it about 4 times and last year I lost count. My 6th gen is a pain and makes me insane sometimes but its never been that bad. If I have to get another car I don't want anything else but a Lexus GS 2007-2011 the newer cars are just too thin and cheap all put together. The only american auto i'd consider is a Tahoe 2008-2013.

My Japanese cars have had 0 problems the entire time I've owned them! I find German cars are a real hit and miss, the one I bought was a disaster (drove three times - sold). German cars will last forever or have an unstoppable amount of problems, totally agree with that. The only American vehicles that I'd buy would be the muscle cars, but even then I'd rather buy a WRX, 370z, etc...

 

They say range rovers and WV's are unreliable too dude

 

VW, Audi, Range Rover, Porsche = sucks and unreliable

BMW = IMO if u stick with the N/A inline 6 are always pretty damn good. Stay away from turbos like 335...and stay FAR away clearly from all bmw v8's...

I had a MB Diesel some years back. I had to start planning my life around its maintenance trips. It suffered from a number of cracked engine brackets caused by vibration (metal fatigue) from the diesel engine. The automatic transmissions are really weak.

I couldn't wait to get rid of it.

 

No wonder the Rovers are so unreliable that same 4.4L they're using in the 7 series 2003-2008 which have issues too. I intended on staying on the Maxima track for a while I wanted keep buying these things for a long time as Accord owners stick with their Accords. The goal is to get something similar to my 6th gen but better the GS seems to have alot in common. As a matter of fact it seems as if Lexus made the GS 2007-2012 as a Maxima imitation they both are twins in a way. If I went from my current car to a GS then i'd have equal legroom headroom,power folding mirrors. Where as if I went from a 6th gen to a 7th gen I'd have to sacrifice interior space,my power folding mirrors. The only advantage i'd gain from that is 25 more hp. That's like me going from being 5ft9 145 pounds to 5ft3 110 pounds

 

German cars in general are bad IMO, there are some VW's/ Audi's that wont die but most are built like crap. I love German cars but I always buy Japanese, German's cost too much to maintain.

My 1998 VW Cabrio (One of the manliest cars you can buy..) was a **** show from the beginning. I've driven many high end Audi's that were brand new but I'm not sure how they're reliability will be down the line, they were amazing though. The S5, S7, and R8 packed a hell of a punch

 

Sorry Chris in no way does the 6th gen look like the GS, GS looks much much better inside and out. GS is not fat looking, way more sleek looking. Rear not the same front no where near the same and its not fat from the side!

 

Gen 6 is too oval/round compared to GS.

Lexus GS and Infiniti M look similar

 

I don't know what else to look at other than a Lexus all these other cars are unreliable Lexus GS/LS Hyundai Genesis. I been to hell and back with my 6th gen so the next choice reliablity has to be there. I'm waiting to see how the 8th gen turns out before I make my move. If they put a 4cylinder 260HP in it then no if they give it 320hp 3.7L then yes.

Yes, these two do look similar, but not really, if you get what I'm trying to say. You can't go wrong with the 3rd Gen GS, though. SMOOTH looking cars, that's VERY well crafted, inside and out.

The 2007+ Infiniti M is a sweet car too, that's VERY underrated. They can be had for a SONG these days. (Not sure if they're major reliability problems with them or not), but I LOVE they way they look. VERY stylish!

 

phattyaltnatl You know what though I would get that InfinitiM but only one thing missing is the power folding mirrors. It trips me out my 6th gen has it but those dont.

Sorry got to jump on the Japanese car superiority band wagon.

Had a 99.5 VW Jetta vr6, loved the speed, looks and interior. Hated electrical problems and price of maintenance.

2001 Chevy Blazer 4 door, typical chevy. Wasted gas like crazy after half tank. seemed like above half it took a week to get there, E was like a day or two away. Developed Chevy lean, suspension squeaks, idler pulleys constantly squealing and felt like it ran hotter than what gauge said.

All the nissans we had we loved, 06 Altima, 95 200sx, 09 maxima and 12 Sentra. I bought the 200sx from some one we knew, it was poorly maintained. Had valve cover leak, front seal leak, paint fading and peeling but that at ran like a champ and never broke down. I fixed everything wrong with car except MOST OF the paint within a month. To be honest the issues with the car were just owner neglect. I washed the car more in 2 weeks than he did when he bought it in 95 which explains paint. He would run it on little to no oil for weeks, never broke down. I miss that thing like crazy and still pissed some punk kid (literally) pulled out in front of me and totaled it.

 

You need power folding mirrors in Texas where i'm located or a cow is gonna come by and knock one off. If not that somebody out here will get them. Either way when you come ouf of Wal Mart one of them will be laying on the ground that's for sure.

Thats pretty funny. Buddy of mine lives right next to a cow farm....no cows knocking any mirrors off that I know of. But heck, we aint in Texas so what do I know.

Power mirrors need to be standard because homebuilders are now like auto manufacturers: They now put 8 foot wide garage doors on home costing up to almost $1,000,000 bucks. Anything to save a penny.

A home near where my wife and I live, and that we looked at for several months, cost just under $700K, but had three garage doors, all 8 feet wide. The non-folding mirrors on my 7th gen Maxima (not an especially wide car) barely cleared the door edges by well under one foot. Yet there was tons of wasted space in the interior floor plan. In my opinion, this was a confusion of priorities.

As an octogenarian who has driven (fairly briskly) for over sixty-five years with no chargable acccident, I do fairly well. BUT, my old neck will not turn like it used to, and I don't need to be backing through tight garage doors when I can't turn my head, and the mirrors won't fold. Using mirrors to back up can only help so much.

We designed the home we are currently in, and our garage doors are ten feet wide. This makes it so easy to get in and out without judging the mirror clearance down to the inch.

I have decided that there are two things I must have on my 8th gen Maxima - heated steering wheel and folding outside mirrors.

 

lightonthehill that's one of the main reasons I didn't wanna give up the 6th gen for the 7th because i'd loose those power folding mirrors. They should have added them on the 7th gen and did them like this

Me and a buddy drove a tractor trailer thru the Bronx once, thru the streets that is...with no issues of mirror damage.

That said I dont think anyone really needs folding mirrors..

 

I like the folding mirrors as well. It really makes no sense to me why a Japanese automaker would not put that feature on their exports (and US-made vehicles) when they've been doing it on their domestics since the early 90s. When we left Japan in 2006, we sold our '94 Accord that had power folding mirrors... And cassette player! Lol

 

I think power folding mirrors would be a great feature... Garage doors are often too small, parking places are always too narrow, and the asses that are trying to squeeze between parked cars are getting much larger!

 

These garages are pretty tight my 6th gen is a pretty big car it barely fits in so i'd be in trouble without the power folding mirrors. You need those in Texas or Insurance companies would go bankrupt if they had horse coverage on their damage policies.
