Nice read. Appreciated.
Detractors on other threads here keep saying 'same old engine', while Nissan keeps telling us that over 60% of the engine parts have been redesigned, and the engine now has more power, yet a 15% improvement in fuel efficiency. What we have here is a failure by detractors to read the available information.

Nismo isn't going to happen.
Yeah, I really did enjoy my 5th gen. In fact, I enjoyed my two 2nd gens, and my 3rd gen, and my 4th gen, and my 5th gen, and my 6th gen and my 7th gen. And the 8th gen has no more power or features than the 5th gen . . . oh, wait . . .
I still think its pretty awesome that you have owned almost every Maxima since it started, lol. This will be my first Max! I think this will bring a lot of new people over to the Nissan Maxima family.
I was driving a Datsun 200SX in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but was carpooling to work in '82, '83 and '84 with a close friend who drove a 1982 Datsun diesel RWD Maxima, with which I was very impressed. In 1984, Nissan added the word 'Nissan' to the word 'Datsun' on the back of the Maxima, and in 1985, they put a Z engine in the Maxima (mounted sideways), changed to FWD and dropped the word Datsun altogether.

I can't get past the CVT. You can't make a true sports sedan with a CVT transmission. I understand there's no market for a manual but a 7-8 speed automatic would be fine. Come on Nissan REALLY
I realize that programming a CVT to step between preset ratios decreases its efficiency in exchange from some "feel" but as long as it delivers what the driver is looking for who cares what's really sitting under the hood? To me this is all that matters from an enthusiasts standpoint.
What's funny is that I remember when VAG debuted their DSG in the US back in the early 00s and sooooooo many people complained about their around-town behavior and now everyone and his or her Mom is begging for some sort of DCT. The CVTs and their programming today are NOT the CVTs of 10 years ago. Can we at least give Nissan their fair shake and try the friggin' thing before we start complaining? While I'd refuse to go with anything other than a three-pedal setup if I ever decided to buy one, almost everything I've read about the VA WRXs optional CVT has been positive which in a car like the Rex is a sign of hope for "Sporty" CVTs IMO.

I don't get this mentality. I can understand folks not wanting to relinquish their third pedals (I fall into this crowd and drive a 6MT Z34) but when it comes to a two pedal setup, as long as the transmission is programmed to behave in a "sporty" (i.e. stepped because it's what our brains are used to) fashion, what's the problem?

Sadly, you are trying to use science and common sense against emotion. In such cases, emotion always wins.
Yes, as the CVT continues to be improved, it will eventually be better than all shifting trannies in both acceleration and fuel efficiency. This is based on very basic high school physics. It wiil also be lighter than shifting trannies. It will also have fewer parts than shifting trannies. It will also be less expensive than shifting trannies. It will also be smaller than shifting trannies. It will also be more reliable than shifting trannies. In fact, the CVT already has passed shifting trannies in several of these areas.
But there are always those who base their feelings on emotion, on past experiences, on 'feels' they recall from earlier days, on what they consider the 'fun factor', etc, etc. Those folks will never accept that the CVT is becoming a better tranny than the automatics.

I believe there is nothing more fun about driving a car than getting to row your own gears. However if I were to get back into drag racing a Maxima, I would want a CVT over anything. Nothing else can compete with being able to convert the most engine power to the drive axle over a wide range of speeds.

I am sure you are correct that the CVT could be the most effective tranny for the track for moderately powered cars, and in the near future, will probably also be available in many high powered cars. Some of us old-timers may drag our feet, but cars with the CVT (or equivalent) will eventually outnumber cars with all other tranny types combined.
