Strange Interior Odor
Strange Interior Odor
My 2016 Platinum smells like cigarette smoke especially when I first get in. I have never smoked a day in my life. No one has ever smoked in the vehicle either. Any thoughts?
How about all the people who have been in and out of your car before you bought it. You didn't say if this is a recent incident or if the smells were that way from day one.
I have been around heavy smokers who were not smoking at the time, but still filled the room with an overpowering stench of cigarette smoke, which lingered long after their departure. I also remember being at a dealer around twenty-five years ago and seeing the person who moved cars into and out of the service department smoking as he worked. Smoking was so common back in the 1930s through 1970s that it was impossible to avoid breathing the obnoxious fumes. I was very happy when smoking was banned in the mid-1970s at the company where I worked. My health has been much better since then. I have NEVER given ANYONE permission to smoke in my car. And never will.
As an ex-cigarette smoker, and sometimes cigar smoker, I am super sensitive to smoke odor for what reason I do not know.
Long story short - I've been smelling cigarette smoke from other vehicles whilst driving. It doesn't happen to often but when it does, that's what it is.

Thank you. I'm not the only one.
I have 7000 miles on the vehicle. I keep it super clean inside and outside.
I did start noticing the odor about 2-3 months ago.

Yeah, was in the wife's car last night, I noticed the smell, like cigarettes, but subtle. Car is a month old, not mildew that's for sure. Must be some of the dash materials, or perhaps the seats/carpet...glues uses...no telling but best guess is to get used to it or cover it up.
I will need to keep my car in the sun more often to help burn off the VOC's from the new materials. I heard sun exposure can help with that.

Interesting you do that. From a habit I picked up many decades ago, after buying a new car, I sit it in the sun with the widows closed tight for an hour or so, then open all windows so the hot air filled with putrid/toxic chemical smells can waft away. I try to do that daily for several weeks, by which time the smells are usually fairly weak.
I previously worked at a Tier 1 Automotive plant and we had this complaint from the manufacturer. The issue came from the glue that was used for headliners. The glue is used for folds at the front of the windshield & moon-roofs, the bracket to hold the front console (holds sunglasses), and clips for holding it in place.
So many variables such as type of glue, temp (burnt), temperature of work area, over-spray, etc... It also depends on if robots are spraying glue or if actually people are laying strings of glue.
What do I suggest? I suggest you report this to your service department and file a complaint so it will be seen. The manufacturer that we supplied hit us on the issue, several of the headliners were replaced. It's typically unknown to the supplier and car manufacturer unless it is brought to their attention.
If you have any questions on the matter feel free to ask, I'll answer the best I can. Hope this helped some of you.
