8th Generation Maxima (2016-) Let's see what Nissan has to offer on the 8th generation Maxima

What would you change about your 8th Gen Maxima, if you could?

So you want to carry more junk? If I were in your position I would want less trunk = less junk.

Main gripe: Steering feel at the limit. A better setup wouldn't have been that hard.
Second gripe: Wish they used a limited slip for the FWD. Too much torque steer and exacerbates the previous problem.
Tiny gripe #1: Sunglass holder is too damn small for anything but old lady reading glasses or maybe cheap aviators.
Tiny gripe #2: USB ports do NOT charge phones quickly enough. Need a 2.1A USB port or something.
Tinier gripe#1: I wish there were more granular adjustment options for the cabin lighting including instrument cluster and info/nav screen. I feel like there is no difference between the lowest 8 levels and then with the top brightness setting it blinds me at night. Wish they could update this via firmware or something.
Tinier gripe#2: Only power port/cigarette lighter is in the console between the front seats and because I have a little tray insert (
https://www.amazon.com/Vesul-Armrest-Secondary-Storage-Console/dp/B01KTVIQD2/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1517428543&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=maxima+consold+tray https://www.amazon.com/Vesul-Armrest-Secondary-Storage-Console/dp/B01KTVIQD2/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1517428543&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=maxima+consold+tray
- available on Amazon) any time I have something plugged into it, the cable needs to be extra long (especially for window mounted equipment) and it has to pass through the tray insert AND the door has to be left open or crammed down to close over whatever wire it is I'm using. They should put an outlet somewhere closer to the dash.
Tinier gripe #3: That dang tray I linked above should be standard equipment.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread . Now that I have had my Max for a while, I can finally say more. Most of this has been said before but here goes...

1. Not sure how to fix this, but way toooo easy to curb rash. Was being super careful going through a bank ATM line but still managed to scrape my rear wheel.

2. Storage space in front and trunk is very limited. (Does have a good glove box though)

3. Too many sqeaks and rattles in cold weather. Seems ok after car warms up

4. Rear sonar seem to be a little slow to react sometimes

5. Wish all the lights were white , not a mix of yellow and white

6. Bluetooth and USB are glitchy sometimes

7. CVT could be better behaved in slow "around town" driving. I'm slowly getting used to it. Highway driving On the other hand is perfect

8. Wish the GPS had better graphics and was easier to use. I like my $200 garmin better

9. I wish the ground lighting could stay on longer when exiting/entering the car. Better yet if they can stay on whenever the headlights are on

Despite all these little gripes, overall I'm really enjoying this car.

It is funny how people see and experience things in different ways. I'm going to respond to each of your "little gripes". I have a '17 SL. With these differences between just 2 different Max owners, like you and I, can you imagine how hard it is for the designers and engineers to produce a car that checks all the boxes for every owner.

1. Agree. Simplest answer would be to use tires with greater sidewall width.
2. Disagree. I find front and trunk room to be more than adequate for my wife and I, and sometimes grandkids. Agree, good glove box and center console too.
3. Disagree. My car has zero squeaks and rattles, even at below zero, and I'm running 36 psi.
4. Disagree. Have noticed no response problems with sonar detection.
5. Agree, esp. if by "yellow" you mean halogen or HID.
6. Disagree. Bluetooth and USB are rock stable with my phone.
7. Agree. This is a significant disappointment for me.
8. Disagree. GPS graphics seem great to me and easy of user interface makes me smile.
9. Disagree. Have noticed no problem with this, and at my 71 years of age I'll bet I move slower than you do. :-)

The counsel **** should do more. Like control the volume

the color changing light should be in the rear

for lights should be led

I should be able to upgrade to android auto

screen mirroring

The album artwork on the display when my ipod is connected should be larger

the Nissan connect app,for my phone should be free.

the Nissan connect app should be able to show my cameras

I agree pretty much with your comments, although I liked the trunk hinges on my 7th generation much better.

Being 71 myself I find some of the comments on the vehicle quality somewhat amusing. I, and I'm sure you remember the quality (or lack thereof) of cars during the 70's and 80's. The quality was soooo bad they came with only a 12 monrh/12 thousand mile warranty. The fit and finish was terrible as so was the dependability. To put it mildly, they were trash. I was a one of those guy's that could not understand why anyone would even consider buying a car Made In Japan. However after I bought my first one I was amazed how much better built they were. I feel the high quality of the American vehicles these days are a direct result of them being out classed by the Japanese vehicles. My 2cents.

I've heard the horror stories about how people used to have their engines rebuilt every 50k miles, I can't even imagine. I figure maybe people didnt drive so far back in those days.

That's what I heard anyway, I didn't take to the wheel till the 1980s. My dad reminded me that my first car was also a Nissan.. a little standard-shift Nissan Sentra with about 70 horsepower. Guess I've finally returned to my roots

I have had a few Datsun/Nissan products over my 35 year driving career with great luck. The best being a '91 300zx turbo that I owned for twenty years and only replaced the fuel pump in that time (other then regular maintenance items).
I have owned my 2017 SL for less than 2 months (I still glance back at my car when I park and go into a store) after owning a 7th Gen. for 4 years. The 2017 is a huge step up. I have a few gripes that would include: the lack of a hinged cover for the cup holders, the two front interior lights by the sunglasses holder are not bright enough, the large hinges in the trunk which eat up major space, and the rattles when it gets below -10 C.

They've added my biggest requests to the 18 model already, adjustable passenger seat and android auto.

Of course AWD would be fantastic, but it's not likely. Overall, I love my Max.

Not sure what year/ model your car is but I just discovered that my 17 SR mirrors fold manually at the car wash recently. It stinks that it’s not automatic and can be dangerous if you forget to unfold them before driving, but can be very helpful if you park in tight spots and don’t want anyone hitting your mirrors.

Tire/wheel combo that doesn't scrape every time I get within a foot of the curb.

I haven't got up the nerve to park in a tight spot yet, I'm the lone dude who parks way in the back of the parking lot to "avoid the crazies". Now that I said that, some punk is probably going to hurl a shopping car into my fender out of spite

I find the CVT excellent. I think a lot of people are so used to driving the old limited ratio transmission that they just don't fully "get" the CVT. I only want CVTs from now on.

I never have problems scraping my wheels.

Nav system is great.

Bluetooth is awesome.

I so don't get the complaints about the sills. Seems petty.

I have no squeaks or rattles.

I have two volume controls, don't need a third on the center console.

Fix the torque converter, it’s too jerky
Improve the build materials and quality
Improve the touchscreen S/w, I’m unable to select a different phone if it can’t download the phone book
Add parking sensors to the middle of the front/back
Don’t use Bose
Heated seats and USB ports in rear

I like the CVT more than I don't, but sometimes it still acts weirdly. If you haven't scraped your wheels yet, you must not live in area where they put guide curbs everywhere... it seems like every bank and drive through around here has them. I like the look of the sills too, but they do tend to be a magnet for water to accumulate. Hopefully theyre just plastic and won't rust.

Improve the HVAC - 18.5C (with A/C on or off) is too cold and 19.0C feels like the air coming from the vents is about 26C. There's no middle ground.

I'd like some kind of indication in manual mode on the display that shows when I can upshift without getting the annoying beep when the car won't let me. I've started using manual mode in slow moving traffic to avoid the bucking bronco torque converter.

I know that bump your talking about, we've discussed it before, but it sounds pretty extreme in your case. Might be time to bring her in to the shop

This one is minor, but the sound door lock makes is not normal. Sounds like a crack, took me a while to figure out what the noise was every time I took off.

The acceleration is so extreme, that's the sound of the frame fracturing! Either that or the locks are a bit on the loud side, as you said

On a related note, I kinda wish they would automatically unlock when I put it in park. My old car does that so that's what I'm used to. I'm always having to remember to unlock the door for my wife if I'm not getting out too.

Ha! I have that same issue! Seems simple, just unlock when you put it in park.

Another small complaint is the radio turning off as soon as you shut the engine off. In my old vehicle it would stay on until you opened the door. It's especially noticeable because I sit there for a second to see my gas mileage after almost every journey (love that little graph by the way).

What annoys me is the sound the shift lever lock makes when in Park and you step on the brake. Almost as loud as the door lock...

Only thing I would change is the fit and finish of the interior my SR rattles worse than my old 1987 Ford Escort terrible for a car that cost nearly $40k

I live in northern Florida, and there definitely seems to be a strong correlation between temperature and the number of rattles and squeaks. While it's not as cold here as most of you experience, it's been below 50 every night, sometimes down to the 30s. The difference is very noticeable this time of year as the daytime temps are starting to get better... 60s and 70s. This car is like jeckle and Hyde, it's a rattle trap at night, and 100% better during the day. I hear Nissan builds these cars in Tennessee, perhaps the should do their testing in a cooler climate. While I'm still very happy with this car overall, I'm glad I didn't buy brand new... otherwise I'd be even more dissapointed about these fit and finish issues

I love the intelligent cruise control, but there is just one more thing I wish it could do. After it brings the car to a complete stop, I wish it would hold the brake until I either hit the brake myself, or hit the gas. Currently, it shuts off after about 3 seconds and the car begins rolling again.

That and a hood mounted laser canon would be nice

Well I suppose at some point the plastics can contract to the point where they don't make contact as well, as opposed to making full contact when they expand.

It's been down to -30C here and my '17 Maxima has as many rattles and creaks as the 2012 Camry Hybrid had when I traded it.

I love the Max. Naturally I would prefer rwd but that isn’t likely to ever happen. Honestly we are lucky to still have the car period. I would like to see heads up display and nicer wheels for the Platinum model. The standard wheels are ok but they are on every Maxima and sort of plain. I hate the Medallion wheels. Other than that I’m good with the car. For you guys that say the radio sucks. Go check out other Nissans. The Maxima/Murano have the best Nissan has to offer.

Yeah when shopping for the Max, I had a brief love affair with the Buick LaCrosse. Turns out to get the sport mode + heads up, it would have cost near 50k with all options. At the end of the day, the Max was just a much better bang for the buck.
