Popping sound when turned off

I just noticed after I turn off the ignition after driving for awhile, I hear a lot of pinging and popping sound that sounds like when you cooking popcorns, the noise seems to be coming off either the exhaust manifold or the cat converter area....So far the car is behaving like normal and had no other concerns...Is this normal??? I just started noticing this now and actually it is pretty weird to be hearing these sounds cause they last for awhile, well maybe I'm exaggerating it's like for 10 seconds ...anyways i'm rambling anybody have this issue before???? thanks.....

Very normal contraction of heated exhaust pipes as they cool. I have heard that at one time or another with every car I have ever owned, especially when the exhaust systems are fairly new.

That's what I was thinking. We have 3 cars and a pick up truck so I checked none of them make this noise for more than a 2 sec, as a matter of fact pick up truck (Tundra) doesn't make any while maxima keeps popping for like 10 seconds.

it is normal, mine pops like for one minute if not more. It’s due to thermal expansion because it gets hot. When you turn it off metal parts starts to contract and that’s why you hear popping noises.

I just purchased a 2017 Nissan Maxima n November of 2019 with only 13,000 miles on it. After about a week of driving it I noticed the same noises coming from my car when it’s turned off. I have taken it back to the dealership at least 8 times complaining about the noise. They tell me it’s normal sounds whenever the manifold gets hot and cool down. Whatever that means I’m a female I do not speak mechanic. It’s really annoying..but the car is fairly new so idk what it could be. I will be taking it somewhere else to get a second opinion. But other than that the car is awesome!

Yes it actually is a popcorn maker, one of the many yummy features of this car. Look for the secret compartment inside the center console and you will find a tasty treat

Here is your early 2nd opinion: THEY are correct. Normal cooling down of exhaust system, especially on fairly new exhaust systems. As the steel "stretches" from heat it will "take a set" and the noise will be reduced over time. I've heard these noises since I've owned cars and I am not a newbie.

Those pinging sounds should be normal. Every car I've had does that. Hell the developers even included the pinging sounds in GTA V after you get out of a car. Something to do with heating expansion and contraction. I wouldn't be worried about it, especially if the car behavior hasn't changed at all

Mine does it too and even though there's nothing to be worried about, it is slightly annoying. I've had over 20 vehicles and none of them have ever snapped, crackled, and popped as much as this one does.

IIRC I'm at about 35K miles on my 2016 Maxima SL and it's still doing the "snap, crackle, pop" routine for a minute or more (haven't timed it) after turning off the engine. It's a normal thing but does seem to last a bit longer than other cars I've owned. It doesn't bother me and isn't anything to be concerned about.
