New owner questions

Hi All. Just bought a 2016 sl and wanted to get your opinions on a couple issues:

1) the previous owner spilled something sticky under the three center console buttons & ****. I'd like to try to take the buttons out to clean underneath, but don't want to risk breaking them. Do these buttons just pop off or should I take it to a dealer and not risk it? I'd rather not pay the dealer if its something i can do myself

2) There's an annoying rattle coming from behind the back passenger seat around the speaker area whenever i go 30+mph. Anyone else have this issue and solved it?

3) Is it just me or does the navi suck? Do you need connect services for traffic?

4) When I remote start the car and then get in, the car automatically shuts off if within like 30 seconds if I don't press brake and start. Is this normal?

Thanks for the help. Other than that, loving the car!

navigation does suck, pretty sure traffic uses sirius XM so you need a subscription. i dont even bother i just use my ipad.

after remote starting the car mine will stays on for i think 5 minutes before it shuts off if i dont start it. if you touch the gear shift button before you brake+start button the car will auto shut off maybe thats whats happening to you?

1. A decent dealer will tell you if the ***** just pull off. Wish I could help you here.
2. May be rear tires need balancing, or overinflated, especially if noise occurs at min. speed. Stuff a buddy in the trunk and take him for an "audio" ride.
3. It may be just you and a few others on here. Personally I love my navi. Connect services yes. Wait long enough and SiriusXM will restart a freebee month so you can try out their traffic, although it does not work in all areas.
4. My 17 SL does the same thing. No reason to let the system go that long before engaging brake and start anyway, although it happened to me just this week when I forgot to engage while talking to someone.

I think you will really enjoy your new ride. Honestly, I have had more compliments on my 17 SL (Coulis) than I have my Corvettes, and from the ladies too!

Same here. Graphics and details good, easy to use, easy to see, never falsed on a destination for me.

It gets you from point A to B, but not always along the best route when compared to google maps. It never detects traffic, which is why I was asking if I have to have sxm traffic to use with gps. Just assumed it would have had basic traffic detection when I bought

Maxi94, see following regarding Maxima Navi: "Detailed Traffic: To enhance your system even more, subscribe to SiriusXM® Traffic (dependent on which system your vehicle is equipped with). You’ll get advanced traffic information that’ll help you get around gridlock, and to your destination on time.[*]"

sschumer is correct that if you want traffic info, you must subscribe to Sirius Traffic. I made a three year subscription to Sirius Traffic shortly after buying my '16 Platinum. I use it every time I am in the car. It has saved me from hours in gridlock many times.

As I recall, I paid around $190 for three years of traffic availability. I will definitely re-subscribe when my current three years are up.

I did NOT subscribe to any of the other Sirius functions, such as glorious and endless radio stations covering countless topics and fields and types of music. I never listen to a radio. I am too busy thinking about what is going on around me, where I am headed and what I need to do when I get there.

The navigation works ok once the address is locked in, otherwise I hate everything else about it. Among my gripes:

1. When searching points of interest, it's hard to figure out which item to select when there are several similar matches. You have to go into each one to see the additional details

2. Saving a favorite place sucks. You can't do it from the main nave screeen, you have to go to settings, address book, add, select a previous address (you can't just say HERE). Then you have to go to edit again to give the saved place a name.

Everything was 100 times easier on my old Garmin window unit

If I have issues with traffic in my area, I turn to WTOP on the radio for traffic on the 8's! lol! other than that, I think the Navi is a big improvement over the 7th gen.

1.Hey their, i recently put a cup of coffee in the center cup holders and while driving spilled some into the center console (3 buttons) the following day i pressed the home button and all 3 were stuck together and felt sticky, what i did was (with the car off) sprayed water with soap into the cracks around the 3 buttons (slowly spray a little into the cracks and push the buttons) until they become loose again and that solved that issue.

2.The rattle behind the rear seat is actually in the trunk, open the trunk and look under you will see 2 metal rods underneath by the speakers, that's the rattle. I taped them together and added foam and that solved that issue.

3.NAV? unless you're using the Audi maps which is google, All car manufacturer maps suck! even with the subscription it sucks imo.

The remote start only works for 10 minutes and will shut off automatically even if you're in the vehicle, after you remote start the car you can remote extend the time by 10 more minutes by repeating the process like the first time.
If you're inside the vehicle after it's been remote started and press the on/off button or the gear shifter it will turn off.

I find the Max NAV to be one of the better ones out there. You can voice program a destination in one sentence! Coming from a 2013 Acura, you don't know what a bad NAV is till you try to use that one. Utterly useless to try to program in a destination and no 3 D view.
Fortunately Acura/Honda seems to be leaning towards the Garmin unit in their later cars. The Garmin unit are far superior.

I have never had an issue with my nav system used in conjunction with Sirius traffic. However, I drove from Boston to Phila yesterday in my new "18 Platinum and used Waze as a backup. It was interesting to hear the conflicting directions but nice to hear the traffic updates and police alerts from the Waze program.

The Max has the best factory Nav I've experienced. Try using a 2006 Toyota Sienna Nav. It's actually not all that bad, except mine still has the original map disk (so it rarely finds anything) and it's controls are not quite as intuitive

How much time will the auto headlights remain on when you turn off the engine and left the doors open?

yesterday I realized when i was Washing my car that the headlights while being in auto position, remained on at least 20 minutes after I turn off the engine switch and left the doors opened

Sounds like you have a problem.

Max. allowed = 3 min. on for headlights per following:

DIC Program Lighting Settings from owner's manual:
"Light Off Delay Allows user to change the duration of time, from 0 to 180 seconds, that the automatic headlights stay on after the vehicle is shut off."

mine has done that for the past 2 years since ive owned the car. yeah if you just turn off your car with the headlights on auto and leave the door open ive seen it stay on for 10 minutes, obviously once u lock the doors it turns off in a few seconds

1) tried this and it worked, but got sticky again when it dried. Then got the idea to stick some wet qtips under and rub, which seemed to do the trick

2) can you provide a pic of which metal rods you're referring to?

3) the nav on this isn't bad, guess I just need sxm traffic as other posters mentioned

Thanks all for the help.

One more issue I came across - I can't open the windows via the remote. I tried holding the unlock button after all doors were unlocked but nothing happens. My key fob also alerts saying it's low battery, so could that be the problem? All other remote functionalities work fine

Yes tried this. There's another video with the new gen which says once all doors are unlocked hold it down for 3 seconds but doesn't work 🤔

Maxi94, you're absolutely right, per 1:14 mark at following video. So as you suggested, may be your key fob battery or something else. 2018 Nissan Maxima - Intelligent Key and Locking Functions:

It's one long press. With the doors locked, press AND HOLD the unlock button until the front windows roll all the way down.

Cabin dust

Anyone have an issue with cabin dust forming rather quickly? They look like small white dots, not sure if it's even dust and they get over the center area & dashboard. I wipe them away often but they come back by the next day or two pretty much. I'm assuming it's from the AC? Is there a way to prevent them from forming so quickly? I have a white max with tan interior, if it helps.

Yeah mine gets pretty dusty too. I think thats just how it is with all the dark shiny surfaces.
Dust probably wouldn't show so much if there were more textured plastics in the console area
