8th Gen and LED Fogs not compatible?

So, I’ve always run Diode Dynamics LEDs w/o issues until now. I bought my SR about 2 months ago and immediately upgraded the fogs to LEDs to match the factory LED headlights. Within days I had moisture and soon after a bulb failure. Now, I have read about the moisture issue that exists with LED bulbs and can buy into the logic which causes it. I called DD who immediately sent me out a replacement bulb. They also stated that these bulb failures are rare. Well, within weeks of installing the replacement bulb I had another bulb failure (different bulb). Now, I am starting to wonder if these cars are not meant to receive LED fogs? If so, why? So, now I have to call DD up yet again to return these lights. I can’t see going back to halogens so is there a better bulb to use out there?

massive thread on this on the front page fyi, ive tried dd and jdm astars before and both of them had condensation. But hey, even the factory bulbs i had small bits of condensation in the corners.. told that was normal from the dealer. way worse with LED since the lack of heat. I gave up on LED's last year been using yellow tinted halogens. Find it looks better anyways tbh. have leds in everything else with no issues, lows, highs, turn signals etc. someone said vLEDS have no moisture issues but im not gonna bother since i had small bits with stock depending on the weather.

Thanks for the input. I will likely give DD one more chance but then maybe switch to HIDs if the next LED fails.

Hey, been messing with this issue the whole weekend. The guy in the other thread said that he drilled some tiny wholes in the housing and he had no problem ever since. Some people claim that fog lights has to have air ventilation in the housing.

Left one had a bit of condensation in the morning now it’s clear. The right one thought still have it. I applied a good amount of silicone because I have spotted very poorly designed flow in JDM products. I believe that the housing is made up with multiple plastic pieces. See attached photo. I think moisture gets inside the fog light housing through led bulb not around it. ( see 3rd pictures for water marks going out of the bulb)

Hey Mike,

First, thank you for your support and patience, this is definitely not the experience we want our customers to have. Especially when they've supported us over the years as you have. This is the first I'm seeing or hearing of this issue, but I'll be passing it along to our engineering team for review.

In the meantime, please keep us posted, and let me know if I can be of any direct assistance.

Thanks Mike!

LED fogs in my 16 Platinum -- no issues

I have the Diode Dynamics LEDs installed in my 8th gen. I have not had a single drop of condensation, ever. The only thing I might suggest (and I'm sure this has been tried!) is to be darn sure the seal for the bulb is complete. Leeching around the seat is a primary cause of moisture gathering in the the fog housing.

A plug for the DD bulbs -- they are fantastic and match my headlamps perfectly. Once you get this worked out, you *will* be very happy with the outcome!

Good luck resolving.

Jake,

Thanks for the concern and posting in this thread. As always, DD customer service is leading the way. I actually returned the “suspect” fog light and had one immediately shipped right out to me. You guys are awesome and very understanding. My fingers are crossed on this last one. Thanks again for all the assistance with this. Looking forward to picking up some LED brake/turn lights from you guys soon.

Thanks man! I will relook at the seals. I too am extremely happy with the way they look as well. They were a bit pricey for light bulbs but worth it in the end.

Thanks for the update, and I appreciate the kind words! At the end of the day, we're enthusiasts too, and hate to see issues like this pop-up. Please keep me posted on everything!

Thanks again,

I have a 2017 SL and replaced the low beam with diode dynamics SL1. Great beam pattern and crisp cutoff line. No glare whatsoever no condensation either. Replaced the fogs as well with SLF yellows and no issues. Going on 2 months now. Great upgrade so far.

Does the SL come with LEDs stock? I thought I heard somewhere along the line that LED vs Halogen have different housings. I have an S and I feel like I'm stuck with Halogen because I won't pay for new housings just to upgrade to LEDs. I also don't want to blind everyone else doing it wrong

SL model has projector housing with halogen lamp bulb Style H11. I’m very happy with the result. Was very simple plug and play connection. access from inner wheel well. Takes about 15 minutes per side to install.

Would vacuum grease on the rubber grommet/seal help keep a consistent seal?

That combo looks great. Any pics available that detail beam pattern on the road. I ordered a kit from Enlight, but I’m not impressed with “customer service”.
