Trying to head off the circular discussion about regular vs premium usage. Here is a case where there is no right or wrong to one's preference on fuel type usage. Fact is I pay less for regular with no adverse effects for the 70000 miles I drove my 2016. The engine computer makes the adjustments without any ping - ever. Originally Posted by Mason Hatcher

It has nothing to do about feeling good paying more. At least I know I will be getting max performance and recommended. It’s even on the fuel door. Originally Posted by robtroxel

Truth be told, the performance difference is not really measurable in our eveyday lives Pounding out 0-60 in a few tics less than 6 seconds is not what this car is all about. It just looks fast even sitting.

Recommended and required are 2 different things completely. The VQ runs just fine on Regular and I do not see anyone ever racing around in their Maxima...Not a car you buy for that......Not to mention, Premium is almost a dollar a gallon more here....BS in my opinion, because it used to be a dime or 20 cents. My 02 Altima VQ had REQUIRED on the Gas door...Never put a drop of anything else in it....My 12, it is Recommended......so it get regular.

Even our Nissan dealer uses regular. What do you mean "max performance"? Do we need it?Originally Posted by FattiesGoneWild

The car is tuned for 91 and takes advantage of it. So it’s all I put in it and it will never see regular. I only use Shell VPower 92 exclusively. Originally Posted by robtroxel

If you go top tier on your premium, that is never a bad Idea. The detergents in the top tier definatey make a difference in how clean you valves, etc stay. The places most people get gas.....waste of money to get the premium if you do not need it. Originally Posted by FattiesGoneWild

I use regular in my Maxima. 33mpg highway and 23-25 blended avg last 6000 miles.
Premiuim maybe yields 5-10% improvement. Not worth the 18-26% increase in price.
I hear you, sometimes the price difference is over 70 cents in some locations and the premium fuel in the Maxima is recommended not required. I haven't switched to regular because the car was new but I will be switching soon . I have not noticed any difference in performance when I have used regular. There is also a AAA article where some tests were conducted using regular when premium was only recommended and there was not a significant performance difference. On the other hand in a vehicle where premium is required it was not a good idea to put regular...Originally Posted by lindros2

<<The detergents in the top tier definatey make a difference in how clean you valves, etc stay.>>
That ...
Folks, repeat after me: it is not about the octane number. The difference in RON between 87/91 and 93 is minimal.
It is not about the octane number.
It is not about the octane number.
It's about the amount and the quality of the detergents/additives refineries put in premium gasoline vs. regular. These detergents keep your engine cleaner, longer.
You can take my word for it, I am a chemical engineer working for an oil company. Anybody technical in my business knows that.
