Glad to hear you liked the Toyota better. Probably many others who feel the way you do. Regarding the exteriors, for my taste, the Maxima exudes "class" and attention to detail, and not the "stick on" kind. Maybe it's the color combo but all the black stick-on "fan boy" pieces of the Toyota do not appeal to me. To each his own. Maybe to dress up that hideous grill re-do, someone could fashion a TuRD emblem and stick 'er right on there under the Toyota emblem.

Reason: To save face.
Go ahead, get the Toyota.
Just be prepared to cry yourself to sleep every night
JK, ok the Avalon is a contender but until they get over this silly darth vader grill kick their on, ill pass on this one. Sure it can be changed, but the Max just looks much better “out of the box”. If you really gonna go Toyota, best go for the es350 instead
I looked at a ton of cars before I got my Maxima, and the Avalon was one of them. This was just when the redesigned Avalon came out so they didn't have a TRD trim yet for it. The Avalon was definitely nice and in the long run it'll run forever, but idk the Maxima just had something that I liked a lot more. I think it was the overall package of the interior and exterior styling and the handling and quickness of the car that connected with me better.
The regular Avalons definitely handle more like a boat than the Maximas, I haven't tried a TRD Avalon though...
and all the people I know who have Avalons are retired/close to retiring so...nothing wrong with that though haha
The only people buying a new Nissan anything over a Toyota product are either fan boys or completely clueless to the automotive world. I’d even prefer a new Camry XSE V6 over the poor selling Maxima. Are these new Maximas still catching on fire when the ABS light suddenly comes on?

lol if everyone was logical, we'd all be driving base Corolla hybrids. You're being a little extreme in your characterization.

I wouldn’t drive a base Corolla hybrid. Buying a Maxima over a Avalon is silly decision. Nissan/Infiniti have fallen so far that it’s not even funny anymore. I have a neighbor who bought a 2018 Maxima (new), he loved at first, but now, not so much. I told him to get rid of it and buy a ES350.
Hey I'm with ya, Nissan/Infiniti are a shadow of their former peaks but I'm just saying you can't just label everyone who buys a new Maxima as a fanboy or completely clueless... That should be reserved for Altima buyers. loljk
I can't speak for everyone obviously but I did my research and really like the way my Maxima looks and drives and the features it had at the time I bought it. As an overall package I liked it the best compared to the 10 other cars I cross shopped. Obviously its not gonna last as long as a Toyota Avalon or Lexus GS but sometimes you just like a product.
What doesn't your neighbor like about it anyways, I'm curious..

Well according to him he bought it because of the price point and the performance it offers at that price. But he said if he had to do it all over again, he wouldn’t have purchased the car. I never asked him why, I just figured he finally realized he could’ve bought a Lexus for not much more.
Hmmm yeah or maybe he just wanted a little more luxury? It's not like people really have a chance to use all the performance of cars nowadays besides a highway onramp or blowing down a curvy mountain road.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was the badge too. Some people care a lot about what car others see them in. ehhh who knows. Tell him to look at a GS 350 F Sport if he really wants luxury, performance, and reliability. That is supposed to be their "sporty sedan" anyways. Too bad this is gonna be the last generation of it. That's next on my list in the future.

The infinite monkey theorem states that a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type any given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare. In fact, the monkey would almost surely type every possible finite text an infinite number of times.

Ouch, I must’ve struck a nerve. My mother also used to call me a monkey. Anyway, did you ever end up duct tapping the plastic trim that flew off your then brand new Maxima while you were at the car wash?
On the trim issue, I used heavy duty clear packing tape for a week until the dealer- who had the piece in stock (!!), replaced it at no charge...I bought a 2020 SR in Sunset Drift in mid June and the trim pieces seem more firmly attached..time will tell..

So this makes your 9th Maxima since back when? Which one is/was your favorite?
First Max was a 1990- SE/ black with a tan leather interior, 160 HP 3 liter V-6, 5 speed box- 3200 pounds. Great car , enough power at the time, comfortable and good looking...put 160 k on her in four years with no repairs. I have enjoyed the progression of the brand for 30 years, and my new SR is, to me a refined package that still pleases me and is fast, comfortable, uniquely styled and still can easily get 30 MPG on the highway- better than its' predecessors. Build quality is, in my experience, still strong and reliability has never been an issue- one of my business partners has run GM sedan products in the same 30 year time frame- from Buick Le Sabre/ Oldsmobile Aurora/ Pontiacs- a Bonneville with a supercharged V-6 that I routinely walked away from on the highway- to Northstar V-8 Caddies, until he fell into the GMC Yukon rabbit hole. What he spent on repairs over the years was laughable compared to my near zero costs. He just "had to" buy/ drive US made crap. He's now semi retired and has had a Mini Cooper S that he loves...

Only a retired goat herder could come up with a statement as lame as this. And you really are a Maxima lover huh?

90’s Nissans, yes. But not your 17 Maxima that is a rolling pile of junk that Renault help manufacturer. The only thing lame around here is a bunch of old geezers such as yourself who believe the Maxima is a better buy over the Avalon.

Randy, I was kidding with you. I thought you would pick up on the references you sight in your very own public profile: "Location: Land of the heartlessInterests: Driving around my MaximaOccupation: Retired goat herder"Your comments here then beg the question, why are you even on this Gen8 site? Hey, enjoy your older Max, and I hope one day you end up with the car of your dreams. Oh, and I never said, nor even implied that the Maxima is a better buy over the Avalon. I just don't don't like the grill, based on new photos I've seen.
As "one of the old geezers", just a final comment- I passed- legally, on the right- a new Avalon on the Mass Pike yesterday- couple in their late 70s I would guess, toozing along in the left lane west of Boston at 72 no doubt cruise controlled MPH- that lane is typically rolling quite nicely at 80 MPH minimum...I think they may have both been asleep or meditating- that car truly is a manifestation of a late 80's Buick- and the nose on it would but Jimmy Durante to shame- for you Gen Xers:
Toyota = Better resale value , underpowered engine..
Nissan = Poor resale value, Great power for a V6 but has a CVT. but The Maxima SR is a great looking car.
If you plan on keeping your Nissan full term.. I would go with the Maxima
If you plan to unload it earlier, Go with the Toyota, They have great resale value even with the the Covid 19 ..

The Avalon is definitely not underpowered. It's only a few tenths of a second behind the Maxima, and it's a larger vehicle.
You should also add that if you're going to keep your Nissan, be prepared to replace the CVT for $4500 once the warranty runs out.
I would never recommend anyone to get the Maxima over an Avalon. If you want a sporty experience, this is not the right segment to shop. If I had to do it again, I would definitely not get the Maxima.

Not all CVT goes bad.... Driver error and lack of Mait lead to most failures of anything with moving parts.
But.. Neither of these cars are "Sport cars" Nothing with the drive wheels in the front is a sports car.
We have one of these Avalon's on our lot... Sticker price with markup is 50 grand..
Come and get it..Lol..

New Maxima 300hp 261 lb ft
New V6 Camry 301 hp 267 lb ft
New Avalon...same as the V6 Camry
Why do you think it’s underpowered? And both the Toyota’s come with a reliable 8spd auto trans. IMO, that’s pretty damn good power for a family sedan from a company that’s considered boring and economical.

perspective is everything. my 1998 Audi A4 w/ 190HP was AWESOME (see: German handshake agreements on horsepower / engine size - that's why Audi/MB/BMW were all the same).
Now, you can get a Mustang w/ 480 HP - or 760 HP... mind blowing.
Back to the Avalon: it shifts into third at 58mph, which is so odd.

Yeah that is odd, unless it’s because of the economy function. Then it would make sense. You have the option to turn off the eco function, or you could use the paddle shifters. But honestly, most people aren’t buying the Avalon for its power. If I were to choose an Avalon over the Max, it would be because of its reliability, size and comfort.
