Collision Warning inactivates itself

2017 Maxima. After driving a few miles, the car beeps and the light comes on indicating the collision warning system is not working. In the past, I've had this happen in a rainstorm, so I'm thinking maybe a leaf or someting moving in front of the sensor? Does anyone know where the sensor is located?

i had that happened recently, after hitting a raccon, my bracket for the sensor was bent, it worked for a while and after a few miles it would stop working. There's also a problem with some sensors who needs replaced.

Heavy rain , snow, or sleet will cause this "deactivation" I believe the sensor for this is located behind the drivers right front bumper skin. Try cleaning this area 1st. My 2016 did this alot. My latest 2019 does not do it as much.

Mine did this as well when it was icy and snowing out. I cleaned off the bumper assuming the sensor was blocked by ice then turned my car off and turned it back on. Problem went away

You mean the "Front radar obstruction" message which disables the cruise control. Mine does that every time I get on the highway, even in perfect weather. It's extremely annoying. I read up on it a bit and it seems to be one of two things, either the sensor is dirty or it is faulty. I believe it requires removal of the front bumper to access it, can anyone verify? If that's the case, I would probably just go ahead and replace it while I'm in there. Anyone know the part number?

{Edit} Nevermind, just realized you are talking about the bumper sensors. I had that happen as well once, they were just dirty. No issues since cleaning them off.

The 2 sonar proximity sensors are the quarter sized round things on the lower front bumper. Just to left of center (looking at the car) on near the grill is a rectangular sensor about postcard sized. This is the radar sensor. Don't go poking at the sonar proximity sensors as they are held on with double sided tape and if you poke the sensor out and get the tape dirty, Nissan will happily replace the sensor with a new one at your expense. I have had the Radar sensor deactivate in heavy rain, but it came back when the rain calmed down. On the last trip I took I was surprised at how well it did when activated for speed control as it slowed the car down to zero when the traffic stopped and started back up when the traffic started moving again!

I have had the same problem on my 2016 Maxima. Nissan service checked the car for any error codes and for sure there were several
indicating the sensors needed calibration. After 30 minutes they returned the car to me and everything was working well, never had the problem
since.

2018 Maxima SV: The round bumper colored tape that covers the sensor is loose. I wonder if it moves while driving and triggers the error light and chime. Is there a way to repair this without replacing the sensor or bumper?

I'm thinking-Yes, that is an issue. A picture of this would really help us understand what you have .

Is it possible to trim the detached edges so it doesn't flap while driving? Is that piece integral to operation of the sensor, is it protective, or is it cosmetic?

As a backstop why not order a replacement from EBAY. It is a plug and play operation though depending on the sensor location, you may have to take the bumper loose for access. I'm sure you can get some guidance from other members on how to do this. To your question, yes, carefully try to remove that flap and see what happens.

Good luck!

I have a 2018 Maxima SR Midnight that did the same thing. When I took mine into the dealership for the voluntary recall (backup camera software update), they also fixed the issue causing "Front radar obstruction" under warranty (by replacing the sensor).

2017 Maxima… driving well until I came to a stop sign and tried to accelerate and the car was stuck at 10mph then after about 30 seconds drove like normal. Took it to the dealership and they tested the transmission and it had a few codes and swapped the transmission. I get The car back and same day coming home it did the exact same thing. Went limp at 30mph. Rpm and spedometer needles steady like they were on cruise control and the collision detection light came on and after about 30 seconds the car drove like normal… what could it be… any advice?

Any advice?

Take it back to the dealer and have them correct the problems.

I just came across this comment after searching for similar situations. The exact thing happened to me, raccoon and everything. I just dropped it off at the dealership this morning waiting to hear back and hoping it’s cover under my claim that’s still open due to the animal.

I was wondering if you ever got this taken care of.

thanks in advance!
