Brake Squeal

I have a 2017 Platinum that has about 21,000 miles on it. Every time I start using the car the brakes squeal like a farm animal. I’m no mechanic so is it unusual to have brakes wear at such mileage?

if I need to get them worked on are there any National shops that are fair and reasonable and so honest work? My dealership is a good 30 minutes from where I live. I can go there if everyone thinks it’s a good idea.

also since the warranty is up what can I expect if it’s just the pads that need replacing?

Thanks for thoughts.

Probably your wear indicators on the pads.

My 2016 Maxima has done that on-'n-off since I bought it new 4+ years ago but this has never affected usage of the brakes. Definitely not brake wear (for me). And not related to temperature.

You could try rebedding the brakes. It won't hurt and may solve your problem.

Copperslip applied sparingly to the REAR of the brake pads is your solution, CRC and Liqui Moly and others offer these products. Common minor issue with a simple solution on my motorcycle brakes and part of regular service there. Easy fix and a reputable shop will help you out. Google brake squeal and you shall be illuminated!

My 2017 SL has been doing it on and off throughout the time I've had it. But the most recent front pads I've gotten from the dealer have been doing exactly like you described consistently since I got them replaced so it's not a wear thing.. Loudest squealing I've ever heard on medium brake pressure.

Bedding the brakes didn't fix it.

Squealing seems to go away after driving a bit and getting the brakes warmed up but then it comes back again the next time I drive.

Let me know if you get a solution that works for you!

That’s been a pet peeve of mine too since i owned the car. I ask about it whenever I bring it in, and they always tell me nothings wrong. I think when it comes time to replace them,I’ll go to a non Nissan shop and make sure they give me quality pads

I highly recommend this procedure before you spend money at a brake shop. I doubt if your brakes are worn enough at your mileage so that the pad wear indicators cause squealing. I've heard of some Maximas getting over 80,000 miles before pads are due. Sounds like a stretch to me but possible I guess.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Bedding sounds like what I do every day and night on Interstate 4 here in Orlando on the way to and from my office.

My only other suggestion is to replace the anti-squeal grease on the back of the pads. Run down to your friendly O'Riley's or Auto Zone and pick up a couple of packs of the grease, it's cheap, and pull the pads and put the grease on the back of the pads. Only take a couple of hours and may save you a trip to the dealer.

Just make sure you don't get any grease on the face of the pads.

Thanks but I guess you missed the part where I said I was no mechanic. If it keeps up i will have to take it somewhere to be looked at. Again though......thanks.

My 2018 platinum has only 26K miles and I have listening to the brake squeal for a long time but I just learned to live with it. There is nothing wrong with the brakes as per the dealer, i looked myself and the pads look like new. So I'm not spending money on that, just close the windows and blast the music and ignore it...

Is this ultimately any concern beyond a nuisance? My 2016 Maxima did it before and after getting new pads at the dealer. Now my 2019 Max does it at 23k miles.

When I dealt with it with the 16 Max I even took it back to the dealer about 6 months after my pad replacement for them to charge me $150 to 'adjust brake assembly' only for it to start back up again. The whole thing with the dealer felt like highway robbery and I only did any of it there as I had the same issue with my old Altima when I got brakes done at a non dealer shop so I was determined to have it 'done right' thinking they must have done something wrong.

It only does it in my 19 when I'm braking lightly and if its not likely to wind up doing damage to something I can just live with it as it goes away when I brake a little harder.

my 2016 and later 2019 Platinums also squeaked @ about 5 mph with no braking applied. I had them checked and all ok, plenty of pad material on each car. Finally gave up since the brakes were working well. You can give the brakes a shot of brake cleaner, and the noise subsides for awhile.(2000 miles)

As an update to my previous reply, last year I ended up just replacing all 4 brakes and rotors with an aftermarket set and the squealing has been eliminated entirely. Something about the OEM pads and rotors just causes early squealing even when there's plenty of pad left.

Thank you for the responses. What you all are saying definitely makes sense, I've only ever had the OEM rotors on my 3 Nissans that have all had this same problem. I may give the brake cleaner a whirl at some point if I'm feeling froggy one weekend!

My 2017 had squeaking brakes from drivers side only since new. At 8,000 miles
i finally said screw it. Went to autozone. Got new autozone gold pads and rotors for lifetime guaranteee. Replaced them squeeking gone,
I know have 16,000 miles on car and last week replaced just the pads, since they were squeaking once in a while ( free replacement pads).

many times brake pads are not properly broken in to begin with so eventually they start squeaking
before you spend money on it try the break in procedure first.
go 60 mph and brake really hard to a stop just short of locking them up,,,do this 3 times then 3 times at 50,40 and then 30mph
this just may fix your issue
its highly recommended to do this procedure on all new brakes.
